Can anyone help on temp- nhs direct 8 hour wait!!!!

Posted earlier, dd, 10 months has had temp all day. Dr says viral just treat with calpol. Her temp is now 38.9 which is after nurofen at 6 and calpol at 8.20. She has had 3x nurofen and 3x calpol already today. She is in our bed, window open, only light babygrow on. At what point should I worry more than I am now?

have you a fan you could use to help cool her?

damp tepid but not cold flannels help

How is she in herself? is she listless? limp? crying? any other symptoms?

did you see the doc today? sorry didnt see your other post.

not too sure of the dosages for nurofen and calpol.

have you tried the out of hours doctors service rahter than NHS direct?

Cool bath and plenty of fluids also bring the temp down.

if she goes limp with it or fits or starts grunting then A&E.

Any dry nappies then ring gp out of hours for appointment.

If she takes less than half her usual fluids over 24 hours, take her back to gp for review. (to assess for dehydration)

If she's hot but fine in herself then keep on with everything but dont worry.

Also bear in mind that thermometers can be inaccurate - if she fine. I tend to rely more on how their skin feels.

when my dd had high temp it was due to ear infection and tonsilitis, i kept her on a towel with just a nappy on, with a fan lightly cooling the air.

is your dd drinking? sips of room temp water helped my dd.

Never a cool bath!!

Just nappy and vest on, make sure you are giving the full allowed dose for her age - ie 2.5ml nurofen, 5ml baby paracetamol, fluids. If the medicine does not reduce the temp at least a bit, ie a degree or so, I would ring out of hours Dr to check, they will get back to you much quicker.

Even if they check her and say continue the meds, thats fine. But a temp that doesn't respond to the usual cooling measures is best to get seen.

DS had this aged 3 months. Same, had 3x calpol. Did not know what else to do. I took him to out of hours surgery at their advice, and the car journey cooled him right down, to the point that he was not feverish by the time I got seen!

Is it possible to take him out in the car, put the air con on? Just an idea as nothing else worked for us.

I agree with other posters, if he worsens, or it does not go down by the morning, straight to A&E, don't bother with out of hours this time at night, they are not always very helpful (its late, they don't want to be there etc) and A&E have to do more tests and give you a full clean bill of health before you go home so you go home assured all is well.

I hope he gets better soon.

Belle they still use this in children's hospitals for high temps.

I took DS with similar symptoms, 2 nights in a row, to OOH GP. It was a virus then too but they sent him to the paeds ward for a full review anyway, not over the top to get them seen

She's not too bad in herself, she's asleep now. No fan unfortunately but window open. Just took again first Reading said 37.2 and second said 38.0, second one is always higher, but that's better than it was. Back to gp in morning if still the same? She only has 2.5mls nurofen and says can have 3-4 a day, she's had 3. Will keep that 4th one for later if I'm desperate. Temps really freak me, thanks ladies

I trained as a paeds nurse, we never put a child with a fever in a cool bath, it sends them into shock. A cool flannel over the forehead yes, an oscillatin fan and lots of fluid, never a bath though.

i was told not cool baths, not to immerse in water as it cools too quickly, and was told to use damp flannel with tepid water for the same reason.

Did you post in the morning and said she had temp of 38?
It raises in the evening, that's normal. She had nurofen at 8.20 so almost 4 hours before your OP. That's fine, it's just starting to lose its effect.
Anything below 40 is fine, babies can run really high fevers.
If there's no other symptoms ie drowsiness, stiff neck etc, don't worry.

2 little spots on her legs not fading, she gets them sometimes but not with temp so off we go to walk in centre/a and e!

What sort of spots are they? Meningitis spots look like red bruises. Is she lethargic?

Thank you, just got back, she now has a viral rash all over her body and a couple of spots on legs that don't fade but can be common in viruses dr said. I always prefer to get these things checked out, she is way too precious to gamble with. Thanks for all help, just got to keep giving her the calpol n nurofen. X

Thanks, she is grumpy, just did a really messy poo but drunk 3oz of her mornibg bottle, just hope it doesn't last too long!
