blue lips and extreme tiredness after tummy bug

i wonder if anyone can offer any advice as i am feeling extremely worried this evening;

my poor ds2 (17 months) has really been through the mill recently. he has had several hospital admissions for breathing difficulties (always associated with colds/chest infections etc) including a week long admission over christmas with rsv, bronchiolitis and pneumonia he is under a lung specialist for all of this.

5 weeks ago he had a nasty tummy bug and seemed to get over it in 4 or 5 days and remained healthy until this weekend when he started with the most violent diarrhoea together with a few vomiting episodes and a fever hovering around 40. this lasted until monday when the fever subsided and he was just having 4 or 5 truly dreadful nappies a day. he was slightly brighter in himself and continued in much the same way yesterday. today, i have been struck down and barely able to move all day. i roped in some help to look after him who told me this evening that his lips had turned bright blue at lunchtime. my ds1 verified this. he was definitely not cold (had actually just eaten a little homemade soup) and his breathing has been perfectly normal (no cold or runny nose etc). added to this he has been excessively tired all day today, has slept loads and barely able to keep his eyes open which is so unlike him.

anyone any experience please, i am so worried. he is sleeping peacefully at the moment.

blue lips indicate cyanosis to some degree and when ds was a baby, after speaking to an on call gp, he said he wouldn't even come out to a child in that state biut send you straight to hospital.

If it happens again, please take him to A&E.

how is he now?

hope you have taken advice and gone to a&e - my ds2 had blue lips and it turned out to be nothing serious BUT i got severely told off for not going to A&E

take him to A&E especially if he is difficult to rouse

thanks for responding, he is sleeping peacefully next to me now (fell asleep in his bath towel which is just so unlike him)

he has had horrendously low oxygen saturation levels in the past but always with repiratory viruses and infections. what was the outcome of your ds's blueness?

he had bronchiolitis, which I see your ds has had too.

Seriously, if he is different and more sleepy to how he usually is, I would get him seen.

Am assuming you have a partner there so see how he is when he wakes, do you expect him to wake for a feed or anything from now on or would he normally sleep through

dh just walked in but is leaving again in the early hours (he travels loads). yes he wakes frequently to feed during the night.

had it happened with me i would have taken him straight to be seen but i only just found out and it has resolved and i can't be far from a loo as i am not well myself today.

just to add, his lips returned to a perfectly normal colour again after a short time.

My DS's blueness was because he had such a high temperature (105.5) and we had him sat outside on a frosty night to try and cool him down. his lips went blue as his body channelled all his blood and warmth to his core. we didn't do A&E at the time because he was alert and responsive but as I say we got told off later

thanks all. he is recovering (albeit slowly) from the tummy bug and has had no more blue lips... i kept a very close eye on him that night and he woke frequently (as always!) a gp checked him out yesterday and aside from being weak and very tired post bug found nothing wrong with him. i shall mention the blueness to his respiratory consultant though.
