Has anyone else got one thin child and one, erm, less thin?

Just had ds2's 2.5yo check with HV.

He is on about 25th percentile for weight, and he is really a little twig compared to ds1, who is much more of a chubster even at 6.

I'm still bfing ds2 a lot, though he eats real food and drinks other stuff obviously, but now feel worried about his weight relative to his brother's especially.

Ds1 was always a big baby and toddler and ds2 has always been quite skinny, well he was pretty average as a baby then has been skinny ever since. He is also on a lower than average percentile for height - does this correlate?

Panicking a bit that she thinks I am starving him.

Yes, i have dd1 (6) and dd2(4) and they are both wearing the same size clothes as dd1 is tiny and her sister is tall and chunky. They eat roughly the same (dd1 is a bit fussy but they eat the same amount).

I'm sure she wont think you are starving him , each child is different.

Thanks Marne, she did look, well slightly 'concerned' which I hate as you never really know what they are thinking.

I suppose I know he doesnt eat much and worry I need to do something about it iyswim.

Glad to hear your dds are of non standard issue also!!

I've got a very tall one and a very short, skinny one. Someone recently asked me (humorously) what was going on there, and I replied that we operate a Darwinian family structure, so the strongest child gets the food.

Their weights and heights haven't been logged officially for years, but the older one used to be 90th centile for height, 50th for weight; the little one 25th for height and about 10th for weight. That's probably still about right.

I'd like to think that the HV has better things to do than wonder if you're starving the little one.

slightly differnt genes = different sized children . ...even if you feed them the exact same food. .
you have a lovely normal family , stop worrying the HV will have seen 100`s of families that have diffently built kids in them.

DD (5) is the same weight as DS (3). She is veeeery skinny, and a terrible eater, BUT she has bags of energy so I try not to worry too much. It's hard though, isn't it?

Yes(ish) dd1 is absolutely tiny- 9th centile for height and 2nd for weight! Whereas dd2 is more like 25th centile for both.

I'm not sure cos I haven't had dd2 weighed or measured but she is 22mths and wearing the same shoes and clothes that dd1 was wearing this time last year when she was over 2.5yrs.

DD1 will be 4 in July and DD2 will be 2 in May and they can share a lot of clothes, particularly skirts, jumpers and tops. However, DD2 is not a big baby just a lot bigger than her sister!

DS is similar to DD2 as well so it is just DD1 who is teeny tiny!

DS1 (7) and DS2 (5) are the same weight

Ds1 is incredibly lean whereas ds2 has erm...more padding. They just have totally different body shapes.

They were both fairly big babies 9lb 4oz and 10lb 7oz but whereas ds1 dropped down the centiles ds2 never did.

I've got 8 yr old twins - one who is at least an inch taller than his twin and on the 9th percentile - v v skinny and the other who is shorter and almost a stone heavier and around the 50% percentile.

The skinny one eats less because he literally can't eat as much and he moves a LOT more, barely ever still, always twitching, leaping, active on the go. He isn't fussed if he has no chocolate or anything sweet.

The plumper one loves to be sedentary and adores sweet foods and chocolate.

This has proved to me how much weight and shape is genetic and how the genetics that make one twin skinny also influence his behaviour that maintains his slim size and vice versa for the other twin.

I had one brother who was obese and the other was painfully thin. They were both fed the same, and IRRC had similar activity levels (neither sporty).

They evened up a lot eventually, after big bro seriously dieted and took up squash and little bro filled out and fell walked.

I was somewhere in between. We all had totally different hair colour and texture too.

I have four two are skinny like their dad and two slightly larger not like their dad [hmmm]. My 2 year old is chunky and my one year old is in 3-6 month old trousers which come hal way up his legs because if he puts on 12 month trousers they Literally fall down. DS2 was the same and his trousers fell down in public a few times. Now he is older he has filled out a little more and the eldest former chubby is now thin so it does all even out.

I just wish their was a shop for slim babies because I can't get shoes that will stay on his skinny feet or trousers to fit his skinny hips
