recurrent vomiting in a 11 month old - no obvious cause

My 11 month old vomits profusely, daily for periods of up to three weeks at a time and then has short periods where he is fine. we have kept food diaries but can find no link with food/milk. He is generally OK when he is not being sick. He has no cough although he does pick up lots of short lived viruses at nursery. He is often not hungry and refuses feeds. He eats only small portions.

The consultant paediatrician says the cause is likely to be phlegm in his stomach and that we must give him less milk and more solid food. I am unconvinced by this explanation.

does anyone havea similar experience?

thanks

I would agree witht he consultant paedo on this one..excessive phlegm is caused by lactose - if a child is lactose intolerant their stomach lines itself with phlegm and then eventually the child is sick.

My DD2 became lactose intolerant when she was about 3mths old - she was fine before this but it suddenly started...she would be sick 2-3 times a day yet she loved her food and was a hungry active lively baby....went to the doctors time and time again and just told its normal....

She then began to lose a lot of weight so the Health Visitor referred me back to the GP and between them agreed she was intolerant so prescribed her soya...absolutely fine with this and from that point on she grew/gained weight and kept it all down. She couldn't have anything with milk in - yoghurts, butter, bread, ice-cream etc etc...she would not only be regularly sick but also have diarrhoea/eczema. The content of her vomit (I know..TMI!) contained a lot of phlegm. We were told about the lining of the stomach theory by a consultant.

By the age of about 2 yrs old we were advised to very slowly wean her on to milk but only in very small amounts and slowly...she was then fine.

I would definitely follow up on this with a specialist. Even if he has spells when he is fine it may be worth just trying to cut out lactose from his diet....and if he is still sick you know its not that.

Thank you for the advice. It does sound as if your experience is similar to mine. I will try the soya alternatives and see if we can scotch it.
