Does prednisolone makes kids go loopy?

DS2 (19 months) is on a short course of steroids, and even though he's really tired he just can seem to sleep during the day and ends up throwing himself about. Could this be a side effect of the steroids?

They've been given around lunchtime so far. Would it be better if I give the rest in the morning?

Do you think moving the time of the dose to first thing in the morning might help him?

We were advised to give them to DD in the morning

It makes me go loopy! so I can only imagine the effect on a LO. Taking it in the morning helps. it wears off about 2 or 3 days after the last dose then expect him to crash out for a while.

DD hasn't been sleeping very well recently - they upped her dose of inhaler

I think from tomorrow I think I will give her the purple one at 5pm - so she can get over it a bit before bed - do you think that would be OK?

Katymac, would giving the inhaler to your dd at 5pm be massively different to the time that she has been having it? If not I'd go for it.

Normally between 7 & 8 - so it's a couple of hours

DS got given some by A & E paed last year in the evening, the paed apologised as he thought we would have interesting night as it's liable to send kids hyper/loopy.

I took that steroid recently and it made me severely manic and hyper. I couldn't sleep at all and didn't even feel tired after not sleeping for 48 hours!

Steroidsa can make people go seriously manic.

Patients on my ward are given high doses and often unable to sleep,can also give mood swings,increase in appetite and just general loopiness.

It will pass once steroids reduced/stopped.

I had steroid induced psychosis earlier this year due to prednisolone. Was horrible, I was barking and neighing, manical laughing followed by hysterical crying. I was totally aware I was doing it but couldn't control it. Ended up being readmitted to hospital via ambulance as DH was too scared to drive me and was knocked out on diazepam until the pred was out of my system. Will never be taking it again! Was on a very high dose though so hopefully wont affect your DS like that!

Another day of bouncing off the walls and really struggling to get to sleep - one dose left so let's hope he begins to settle quickly.

Poor you Iwish (and your DS) depending on how long the course is it might take a day or two to get out of his system, hope he's back to normal soon
