Got referral to admit ds2 to hospital tonight - but think he is Ok now?

Hi, forgive my rambling but am a trifle confused and not sure what to do.

Ds2 is almost 2yo. He's had a virus all week, probably the same one his big bro had last week - high fever for a couple of days, then about four days of no fever but a very spotty rash. (ds1 escaped the rash mostly)

Hd a thread about what it might be, consensus probably slapped cheek or just virus.

Anyway today we got back from collecting ds1 from a party, and ds2 started to yell - really sounded in pain, holding his little head, screaming, saying 'Ow' - he isn't a big screamed normally.

Checked his temp, nothing (36.0) so gave calpol as pain relief and he slept briefly - woke again half an hour later, screamed again and more head hitting, so gave cuprofen and rang OOH.
They said come right up, so we did, and he screamed all the way there, until we were seen.
Dr checked him all over, ears are fine, throat fine, nothing to indicate a problem apart from he was obv in pain and distressed.

He said he had no idea whatw as up, and wrote us a referral to the nearest paeds ward (about 15 miles away)- this took 10 mins by which time ds had calmed down and was smiling.

Dr said if he settles don't worry but take him if he starts again...he had a quick burst of 'ow' again in the bath, but has since been Ok.

I've alerted my mum to come and sit with ds1 if I have to drive there later - but should I just go now?

There's still no temp, I did have some diet coke this morning which i am hypothesising might have got through into the milk, and given him a headache? (seem to remember it had similar effect when he was a baby)

But what else might cause a headache in a toddler? Eyes maybe?

Any thouhgts welcome, thanks x

Mmm, do you have the number of the hospital? If so you could ring and ask to speak to the admissions ward sister/doctor, and say you think he is settled and wont need to be seen.

I would not simply not go. They will probably be expecting you. If you do subsequently need to take him they will be unimpressed at what will be perceived to be delayed presentation.

As to what it is, no idea. Probably nothing. But my LO at 2 1/4 is saying lots of ows, hurts, poorly, etc and she has had 2 splinters and a broken nail in the last couple of weeks, as well as a raspberry seed stuck in her teeth.

og gosh, i don't know.
is he still up or in bed now?

thanks Rempy, and lOL at raspberry seed!

The Dr said don't go unless he gets distressed again, as there is a shortage of beds and if he does warrant admitting he'll have to go to a different hospital, so I assumed he hadn't told them we'd definitely be going. I don't have the number of the hospital but could probably look it up.

Maybe I'll ring them,. thankyou.

TIY - still up, just about, and wandering about in nappy seemingly fine

I think he got himself worked up into a real state and then couldn't stop iyswim.

I do that with enough caffeine in my system

why not give nhs direct a call and see what they think?

i think i'd be tempted to go to a&e tbh, if he does it again.

Yes if he does start aain I will definitely go...it was v upsetting for everyone but especially him, poor mite.

The lack of temp is reassuring though. I just can't think what else might be wrong. I think they were concerned at a toddler having a headache. Plus he looks quite alarming all spotty.

well yes, the apparent headache is what would worry me too.
virus/rash type stuff is fairly normal, but head things worry me lol

hope he's ok

the only annoying thing I would say is that I once didn't take dd after we had been told to go and she temporarily got better then worse and the first thing they said was WHY didn't you take her when you were advised grr

so any doubt, probably better to go (though I feel your pain on a Sunday night!)

Raspberry seed needed a small operation with a safety pin - no toothpicks in the house and it was wedged in the gap between her two front teeth right up at the gum....

She was very good and sat very still!

And now wont eat them anymore.

Thankyou...oh dear...perhaps we should.

It will be hard taking ds1 though who is almost asleep and has school in the morning. Mum has work tomorrow and doesn't want to come over.

i think I'[ll wing it and see if he settles and sleeps Ok. If he wakes and is miserable again, I'll wake ds1 and we'll all go. If not then that's better still.

If he were burning up or having breathing problems etc I'd not hesitate, but it doesn't seem desperately serious right now, ie not systemic if that makes sense as I'm sure he'd be slightly hot at least if it was a scary illness.

Thankyou for your help everyone. I'll update tmrw xx

Well, he was fine till about 4am then he woke and cried again, briefly - some more cuprofen and he slept ok till morning.

He's not too happy this am, but not actually poorly really. However the rash is still very red on his little face, it almost looks a bit scabby now (I think he has scratched) as there are tiny dark dots in the centres of some of the spots.

I'll put a picture on in a moment, I can't think what it might be - almost looks more allergic, it reminds me of lots of little bee stings. I don't think it could be chick pox, though he was exposed about 3 weeks ago.

Poor sleepy boy

thanks tIY.

His little face is so red again tonight and still holding his head when he cries, but at least he seems soothed by bf unlike yesterday.

I'm trying to think what he could be allergic to. Might try our GP tomorrow if he has a bad night.
