Has anyone had a 2-year old with a broken femur?

A friend of mine has a two-year old who has broken his femur. He is in hopital for three weeks and she was told that it will take 6 weeks 'to heal'? What exactly does this mean? Until it can bear weight? Until it is back to normal? Any ideas, tips, etc?

It sounds a bit like what my ds2 is going though. He broke his elbow on Monday and was put in traction. He will remain in hospital for 3 weeks before he can come home. I was told today that he will come home without a plaster cast, but will be given a sling, not because hsi arm will need supporting, but because people will tend to give him more room and he will less likely be knocked in the arm by passers by. I am guessing it is a similar sort of thing for your friends ds. I wish I could be more specific about the weight baring or fully healed question but I just don't know.

whether he can weight bear will be down to the his consultant. it will depend on the type of fracture.

get him some things he can do sitting down like some hammering, sticking etc.

Good luck to your ds. I hope the hospital is as great as our local hospital - my dd constantly wants to go and visit her friend because it is so great (with so many more toys than she has!)

I believe it is 6 weeks for the bone to grow anew and yes, be strong enough to weight bear.

My ds broke his leg just under the knee when he was two, poor boy - he was plastered up as an outpatient, no 3 week hospital for him!

But yes his cast came of 6 weeks later and he bore weight immediately and without any problem whatsoever. Good luck to your boy Heartmum and to your friend's, Racing!
