Please come and talk to me about DD's toe and AB's

DD (7) has a red swollen big toe it is red around and under the nail bed and at the side of the nail it has a small white lump of skin which looks as though it has some pus in it .

We went to Dr's yesterday and she said it was infected and prescribed AB's she is taking a 5 ml dose 4 times a day.

My worries are the toe does not seem to be getting any better despite been on the AB's for over 24 hours now . It has not got bigger or redder but it has not gone down really either .

It is not causing her as much pain as yesterday and she has only mentioned it hurting once . We are bathing it a couple of times a day .

So does anyone know how long Ab's should take to kick in ?

If it has not improved by tomorrow DP wants us to go to A&E I am really hoping it goes down because she has a residential trip starting Monday which she is really looking forward to and our baby is due anytime and I am worried they may keep her in .

Any help or advice would be really welcome.

TIA.

i would expect it to take 2 -3 days to be visibly different, if it hurts less, that implies it's recovering already. hard to tell, as everyone reacts differently.

can you not just go back to your doctor's rather than a&e? she's not in any immediate danger & her doc will know what the toe looked like last time & what she's been taking, so more informed of the situation.

Could it be an ingrown toe nail? It sounds like it could be to me. If so when I took antibiots with one they didn't do anything as the source of the infection was still there.

When my DD had an infected toe, minor injuries put magnesium sulphate on it then bandaged it. We had to go back a couple of days later and when they took off the bandage, the pus had come out. If it hadn't they were going to get it out with a small incision. It turned out to be whitlow caused by sand getting under the nail from a holiday a few weeks previously.

I agree with kickassangel - it's not an accident or an emergency so I would either go back to the GP, or go to minor injuries like MegGriffin did if it's not getting better in a couple of days.

Hi thanks for the answers in the past hour it seems to have gone slightly down so fingers crossed.

Just to point out WRT A&E the minor injuries unit where we would go is located on the same site as our local A&E so everyone still calls it A&E sorry for confusing you.
