Worried about germs from a cold air humidifier filter..

We had a cold air humidifier which has stood dormant for a few months. DH decided to remove filter today and it was covered in horrible black mouldy looking stuff he left it in sink in bathroom, bathed DD in the bathroom before deciding to throw it out. I know these can be breeding grounds for germs and I am worried incase DD (or us) could have caught some nasty germ from this - am I being irrational?
