Temperature but otherwise okay

Hello. My youngest ds (22 months) has had a high temperature on and off since yesterday (Saturday) afternoon. It started just after he woke up from a nap. I gave him Neurofen and it came back down but a couple of hours later it went up again. I left it between doses as you're meant to but as I had run out of Calpol night he only got a 2.5ml dose which didn't bring it down. It went up to 38.8 at one point. Before midnight I gave him another dose of Calpol and he slept well. (He wasn't sweating or clammy just really, really hot) This morning, first thing after I woke up, I checked and it was 35.6 (very happy) but 10 minutes later he started heating up again and went back to 38.8 so I gave him another dose of Calpol and its back in the normal range. He hasn't drank his usual amount of milk on either day but had his usual dinner last night and has eaten a banana, apple and pear with a fair amount of water. At the moment I'm looking at him and he's fine; playing with his sister but I'm feeling concerned about it going back up again. He had his last dose at 11.50 this morning. You'd think with him being the youngest of three I wouldn't worry as much but I do...
What do you think?

A temp of 35.6 is far too low, hyperthermic even. You do need to get him checked over, especially as there's no obvious reason for this, a temp this low is as concerning as a high temp. Give NHS direct a call.

First of all, I personally wouldn't worry about a one-off reading of 35.something. Its happened to me loads of times with the dds (whose baseline norm is around 36.5 anyway). All it takes, at least with an ear thermometer, is for their ear canal to be cooled down a bit for some reason - or an inaccurate reading, or just a dip in temp. They've always been fine. Not saying you shouldn't ring NHSD if you are worried, just my experience

Also, both my dds and I have had temperature only bugs recently - temps that go up and down, feel rubbish one minute, fine the next, and last about 6 days. If he's playing and eating, I wouldn't worry - just keep an eye out and give Calpol or Nurofen for kids as needed! Hope he's better soon.
