tummy ache

my 6 year old has been complaining of a tummy ache (round the belly button area) since the Friday before last. We have tried calpol, hot water bottles, and even resorted to infacol (in case it was wind).

He has been looking very sorry for himself - but has also had a bit of a cold.

Have finally decided to take him to the GP - but I am not sure that is going to help much. I googled it and it seems a common problem - but maybe not one that lasts this long.

I don't think it is a stress thing. Although he did sometimes in the past use a tummy as a reason not to go to school (usually he went and was told if it gets worse get the teacher to ring us - and never did).

Any ideas what is might be, what we can do to stop it, and what the GP might suggest ?

I may be wrong but I think there are glands in teh tummy area, like the ones in your neck, under arms etc. If children are abit under the weather they can get swollen and uncomfortable, which is why children of ten complain of tummy ache when they have a cold or something. I think maybe we just get used to it as adults.

How weird, was just about to post exactly the same message about my DS (2.5)

He's been complaining about tummy ache off and on for the past 10 days or so, but as appetite and poos have been normal and there's no fever I've been ignoring it.

Was now wondering whether to make GP apt but don't want to waste their time.

Sorry, I'm not helping!!! But I am sympathising and waiting for someone more helpful to turn up!

Oh yes, mine get sore tummies when they're fighting something off.

marmmummy - that is it exactly - I have been wondering if it is a virus (isn't that what is blamed for all unexplained ailments ?!).

Seeline - I read about the gland thing on google. He often complains of tummy pain and a sore throat at the same time and I always think he is trying to avoid school (given it is usually early morning school days) - and always said that is not a combination that goes together - but maybe I am wrong if it is glandular then maybe I should believe him .

lindenlass - no constipation or diarrhoea (well at least not more than normal).

Well, my DS has had these tummy pains and nausea for about a year now, and have been getting worse and worse. Finally took him to the doctor and they thought poss. abdominal migrains. Not sure though, and has had tests for allergies and an ultrsound scan. Suddenly they stopped 2 weeks ago, but he had a mild bout today.

This is my first post so be nice and gentle with me. Well my DD has also been complaining of tummy pains since oct time, she is off school at the moment with them because she has been sick twice, I know with her it is because of constipation, she doesn't eat or drink enough, so the doctor yesterday put her on some medicine, and told me to give her an extra banana and more fluids a day, (can't at the moment bringing everything back up). So hopefully by tomorrow she should be feeling a lot better.
