Tooth abscess, been drained and on antibiotics nearly a week

My little boy started antibiotics on monday (a week tomorrow) for a tooth abscess caused by a cracked tooth. He went to the dentist on thursday who drained/burst it, to relieve the pain from pressure build up and advised us to continue with amoxiciillin, since it has grown in size again. He is due to go back saturday, hopefully to have it removed. If it's still too swollen, the can't use anasthetic, should the antibiotics have reduced the swelling by now or should we wait a bit longer?

Just been through this myself with my 7 year old. It started to go down with the anti biotics but came worse so had to go back for second lot of anti biotics. He has to have the tooth out via GA. Horrible for them isn't it Sad

Does he have to have it out with GA because the swelling isn't reducing or have you chosen to do it that way? If he goes back saturday and it's still too swollen then they can't remove it with LA as it won't numb it & then the only option is to wait for a referral to hospital, but I've been told that could take weeks and I really don't want him to be suffering for that long.
Yes it's horrible, hope your boy is ok.

Our actual dentist whom I don't like, said could go to a specialist dentist who would sedate him. Then said just leave him another 6 months and see what he's like. (!!) then we had to go to the emergency dentist one Eve when it got worse after first lot of anti biotics, she happens to be a consultant who works at the hospital, she said his age shouldn't be sedated as the risks for under or over sedating are too high and should be done under general anaesthetic. So I'm very glad about that. This happened beg of the holidays, I sent the referral back off to hr hospital, have an apt 2 weeks yesterday for a consultation with consultant about it and we should then have a date to take it out within the month. So all in all about 3 months it will be so yes a long time.

Some days it doesn't bother him over days it sore so will give calpol. Sometimes it gets caught by the toothbrush and will bleed.

Anothernamechanger1 how's your son doing?
They went ahead and pulled ds' tooth even with the big abscess (he said he felt it whilst they were pulling it!) Here's the damage...
Do said it was awful to watch, but at least it's sorted now. Good luck to your little one

Ouch!!! Poor thing! He's ok at the moment, not had any bother with it. He has appointment a week on Monday with the consultant about it and should get the date for the GA within 4 weeks!

How is your ds feeling after now it's out?

Dd had one pulled out under local - she said it was fine, immediately the pain was less. That was about 6 weeks ago and no problems since, just waiting for the adult tooth now. Hope he has a full recovery.

Thank you both. Glad to hear your dd hasn't had any problems shouldwestayorshouldwego

Good to hear it's not bothering him Anothernamechanger1 hopefully it stays that way until he is seen. Luckily he's not in any discomfort, I've got paracetamol at the ready just in case
