Itchy scalp - but no nits

My 9 year old dd has been complaining of an itchy scalp the last few days. We've all had nits before and I know what to look for - I've been looking and looking in natural light and there's nothing in her hair - no lice and no eggs.

Does anyone know what else could be causing the itchiness? Should I be using a special shampoo or anything like that? Thanks.

I have had similar this ever since I was a child. I have a mild type a scalp psoriasis. I get a really itchy scalp and the top layer is quite soft. I dont get dandruff from it but I do get blood-y scabs and white scabs.
My scalp gets more itchy if i get sweaty, if I go to bed with even damp hair or if I am stressed.
I use Polytar shampoo which you can get on prescription or over the counter or some people I know use T gel shampoo.
Be careful though as when I went to get some more of my shampoo from the dr a few months ago I didnt see my usual dr and she tried t convince me it was nits hen i knew it wasnt.
hth.

if there's no bleeding/flaky skin could it just be heat/sweatiness? Mine seems to have a "sweaty head" and if I don't tie her hair back every day she gets kind of cradle cap (she's 6 Confused) and her hair sticks to her ears causing redness and itching. If it's looking sore at all get it checked out.

Thanks for this post Dancergirl. Have been watching as my DD 4 years has had the same problem over the past few days. I've washed it really well this morning and will keep checking scalp for dryness. Hope your DD improves too.

Dd has had the same and I put some plain moisturiser on her scalp, it helps the dryness and itching. I use Boots sensitive baby moisturiser.
