DS1 is coming up for 8 and loves reading, especially humourous fiction (e.g. Captain underpants). Can anyone suggest books in the next level up for him?

My DS1 is 8. He doesn't read very well but we are trying the Beast Quest books and Spy Dog. They're not humourous but quite exciting (in an 8 year old kind of way!)

DS2 that should say! blush

DS is 8 and loves Jeremy Strong's books and the Horrible History series.

He also still enjoys Horrid Henry, mainly because he finds them so easy to read now, and really struggled a few months back

He will also read anything with a football theme.

Which is the best Jeremy Strong to get him started? "Beware! Killer Tomatoes" seems to have won a couple of awards...

Thanks for the Beast Quest and Spy Dog recommendations. Are they a series?

My DS loves Jeremy Strong's Hundred Mile an Hour Dog books, and also Astrosaurs series and the Moo Cow stories...

DS is 9 now but when still 8 started reading the first of the Wardstone Chronicles, The Spook's Apprentice

Not funny/humorous - possibly a little scary in places, but as a non-fiction reader this is the most he has read fiction. Having finished the first he requested the 2nd and 3rd for his birthday. Then spent saved pocket money on the 4th. Supsect 5th will be part of Christmas presents!

What pleases me more is film coming out soon of the 1st book - so this is one where he's read the book before the film.

Would definitely recommend.

Something in-between "Captain Underpants" and the above would be "An Unfortunate Series of Incidences". DS has the box set (cheap from the book people)

Presumably he has already devoured the ouvre of Roald Dahl? That would be the obvious place to start.

oeuvre, surely? wink

Some of Anthony Horowitz's books are good for younger readers - Granny is hilarious, and DS enjoyed the Groosham Grange books and Diamond Brothers series at that sort of age.

Would second the 100 mile an hour dog books, but really anything by Strong is well received. DS also enjoyed the Cows in Action books, daft but fun
