Did anyone watch the Michael Rosen programme last night?

The one where he spent time at a school in Wales getting them enthused about reading?
It was good, but the school was starting from such a low base that I was really shocked. They seemed to have missed completely the point that teaching children to read was only half the battle - showing them what a PLEASURE it can be is even more important. Call me naive, but I was shocked that it was clear that at the beginning of the programme most teachers did not routinely read stories to their class. Every teacher in my DDs' school tries to find 20 minutes a day to read to their class. I thought every teacher did.

That school library was in a shocking state.

I heart Rosen.

Thank you very much - I'll try and watch that with dh tonight. We used to run a bookshop and we are both evangelical about reading to children!

I love Michael Rosen too but ds (aged 8) has just read an absolutely awful book by him as his school book. It was called "You're thinking about tomatoes". Ds loved it but I am very glad we are reading "Danny Champion of the World" now! Much better!

Finally got round to watching the Michael Rosen programme. How sad that that little girl had decided at the age of five that she was too old to be read to and she didn't want to be treated like a baby! We are still reading to dd who is nearly 12!

I am KM1 btw (namechanged as was fed up having a boring name )
