Simon Bartram and Julia Donaldson are their current favs.

Have bought dd loads recently but didn't get inspired for the boys in our ( v small) Waterstones.

Little Red Train books by Benedict Blathwayt. Really lovely illustrations with loads of detail in them. Nice gentle stories, but quite boy-orientated.

Ds loved them too. And Julia Donaldson. Also quite liked hairy MacClary etc. He also liked Thomas books and Bob the Builder (but I hated those!)

He quite liked books by Jill Murphy, and also the Blue Kangaroo boks by Emma Chichester Clarke.

How about Harry and his bucketful of dinosaurs? Ds was never into dinosaurs, but I know lots of boys are.

Yep we have all of those too.

I feel they need more complex books like JD,BB and SB but aren't quite ready for paperbacks although they love Flat Stanley.

They're knackered after school so want to stick with picture books for a while as they have loads of reading homework. Want to treat them to some new ones to keep them enjoying books whilst learning to read iykwim.

Can't seem to find many as good as those mentioned.

Have you had a look at Usborne?

They have a lovely book called Illustrated Stories for Boys have a look at the links on the right to see inside the book.

The See Inside books are also good fun - this one is Pirate Ships but there are loads of others.

Have a look at this link - I just put books for 5yrs+ into the search bit, there are lots of very different sorts.

I am an Usborne organiser, so CAT me if you'd like to buy any - free p&p!!

What about John Burningham? There's MR Gumpy's Outing, but also less well known ones like Would you Rather (all about deciding which thing you'd like - so to eat snail stew or drink slug lemonade, or to have breakfast in a hot air balloon or have tea in a boat) just great to share and each choose one option. We also love Harquin, about a fox who outwits the huntsmen, and John Patrick Norman McHennessy about a boy who gets grief from his teacher. We adore John Burningham here - both me, DH and 5 yr old twins.

Geronimo Stilton - longer books but still full colour?

Cows in Action or Astrosaurs - have only line drawings but plenty of them and they are exciting (accordingly to nearly 6 year old ds who got up at 6am to finish one!)

My son started on the Captain Underpants books. They made me whince a bit but they were the first 'proper' books he could manage. After that it was Horrid Henry and from then on there was no stopping him.
