Anyone reading MG Harris - Invisible City?

DD and I were reading this together as our bedtime story over the summer. It started very well and then began to drag.

And then it just got worse... and worse... Characters brought in and abandoned for no reason, endless chapters of exposition... Painfully tedious section in the "city" itself...

DD finally finished it on her own and I can't be bothered.

Major case of Emperor's New Clothes, I feel. Author has had huge promotion, seems to be popular and has a sequel on the way.

What am I missing? if you enjoyed it, please tell me!!
