'Early readers' books - red or blue? or something else?

DS1 has just turned 7 and reads at around Level 10 on oxford reading tree. Actually, I think level 10 is a bit of a stretch for him, he comfortably reads at level 9, really. He still likes pictures to look at on each page, but he also likes the idea of chapter books and feels proud that he can read a chapter book himself. He manages about 6 pages of an ORT book at a time.

I was thinking of getting some of the early readers books for him. Would he be on the blue ones (which I understand are easier) or red? he can get daunted by too much text in a block.

Or should I be considering other books?

I had contemplated getting ORT Level 10 books in a different series eg their non fiction ones, or their myths and legends type ones, but he sees all ORT books as 'school books' and wouldn't want to read those for pleasure.

I'm sorry, I don't know offhand about the different books but our local library has a large range of early readers books - we found it very useful for DD while she was learning to get things a bit more interesting than school books. She particularly loved the DK Readers because they had reading books about the Avengers and such.

Thanks for your reply. I need to find some time when I don't have any DC with me so that I can browse in Waterstones and look for myself, I think.

Do you have access to a local library WellTidy? My DD is at a similar level and is enjoying simple chapter books. I read to her every evening at bedtime and she will follow the text as I'm reading and take over for a while, after I tuck her in I've twigged that she's been reading on to the next chapter (Secret Seven mystery books where she knew the outcome before we'd officially got yo that part!).

Some good ones we've both enjoyed:

Dixie o Day series
Angela Nicely (same author as Dirty Bertie)
Dirty Bertie
Secret Seven series
Lucky Stars series by Phoebe Bright

These are perhaps a bit girly for your DS but will give some ideas anyway.
