Books for a 9 year old girl?

I'm giving my old kindle to a friends DD and wanted to put a few books on for her.

She's read the bfg and matilda but I don't really know what's best for a 9 year old as our eldest is just 7 and when I was 9 I was reading adult books which definitely would not go down well!

I should point out adult books was whatever looked interesting in the library. Not I was reading erotica at 9!

Might be best to ask your friend? 9 year olds can have massively different reading abilities and interests.

If she hasn't read them the How to Train your Dragon books by Cressida Cowell are fun and probably around the same reading level as BFG/Matilda. There's also a series about Humphrey the Hamster which are funny and popular around that age - the first one IIRC is The World According to Humphrey.

Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren...
Google Eyes by Anne Fine...
Millions by Frank Cottrell Boyce...
Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume...
all these Authors have written loads more so if she likes one, there's plenty more to continue with.
and of course The London Eye Mystery by Siobhan Dowd!

Beverly Cleary's "Ramona" books.
Encyclopedia Brown books
Anastasia Krupnik books by Lois Lowry.

All American but fantastic classics.

David Walliams books (there is a new one just out)
Michael Morpurgo books
Wimpey kid
Tom Gates
Ballet shoes
Roman mysteries
Swallows and Amazons
Secret garden

I would check though - I have 2 9 year old DDs who have already read a lot of the books mentioned (and they do not read as much as some of their friends).

When I was nine I loved the Narnia books by C.S. Lewis better than anything (except The Last Battle - I never cared much for that one). Stig of the Dump by Clive King was another favourite at that age - brilliant book. And The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Wolves of Willoughby Chase by Joan Aiken, The Hundred and One Dalmations by Dodie Smith, Finn Family Moomintroll by Tove Jansson and the Professor Branestawm books by Norman Hunter.

Dd is reading "Snowbone" by Cat Weatherall. She's really enjoying it.
