Hi

We live outside the UK and when my daughter starts school in Sept religious education classes will only teach the Christian viewpoint, unlike in the UK where she would be taught about all the major religions. She and her brother go to a state (officially not church affiliated) Kindergarten currently and are also told and read stories from the Christian tradition, which is fine although not so fine that they are presented as "true" without any question, and they don't have the little celebrations of Diwali or other religious festivals a UK preschool would also include - there is no balance and as a non religious parent I would like my children to have more breadth (and less dogmatism, but there is not much I can do about that) in their religious education!

I would like to compensate for the lack of balance somewhat with a nice, attractive, book appealing to children with some kind of introduction to all the bigger religions, in which they are all given similar weight and credibility, perhaps with some of the key stories from the religions as well as a bit about how children practice those religions (festivals etc). My daughter is currently 5.5.

Does anyone have a book like this that actually appeals to children of this age? We have a book on creation myths that I ordered from Amazon but it is a bit dry and she doesn't ask for it - probably geared at slightly older children anyway, so I would love a personal recommendation if possible!

Many thanks for any ideas!

This is probably a bit more basic than you're thinking of, but its a nice starting point. Its also a very attractive book with all the flaps & pictures. It doesn't have any of the stories, but talks about the different religious items people wear, where they worship etc.

Thanks Takver - as you say that looks like a nice starting point, and I will definitely order it - looks appropriate for my 3 year old too, which is good! I may be a bit ambitious hoping for everything I have mentioned in one child friendly book!

Does anyone else know of any nice books that might compliment this one, with ideally some of the key myths/ stories from a variety of religions?
