How to Train your Dragon series
Captain Underpants

I don't know the Beast Quest series, but I think they are a 'boy' version of the evil Rainbow Fairies . . . which have no literary merit, and appear to be designed to make adults chew their own arms off to escape reading them - but are kiddie-crack to a lot of little girls.

At the same stage, ds loved joke books. They gave him the opportunity to read a few lines without being scared off by too much text. It's also a good way of knowing if they are understanding what they are reading.

Also, audiobooks. He can get into a more in-depth story even if the text is too tricky. Ds loved (and still does) Roald Dahl, Winnie the Pooh, the dreaded Horrid Henry.

He also enjoyed Beano comics - again not too much text but fun to read.

Agree with DaftApeth about joke books. My children loved the Horrid Henry ones and they helped them understand different types of humour like sarcasm, puns etc.

Definitely see if he likes the Beano - this advice applies to book-shy girls too!

Get some annuals this xmas, whichever he may be interested in.

There's lots of good non-fiction too which may appeal to him more.


But do carry on reading to him too.
