you are being daft (said in a nice way BTW!)

You are seeing it because you are worrying. It's always been there, you just didn't notice it before.

You are being really daft

Now you have two choices, you can either accept that you're being silly and put it out of your mind, or you can buy a shotgun and shoot the magpie

I go with choice 1

Its because at this time of year, the females are all sitting on their eggs. Or the male is taking his turn while the female eats. Thats why you are only seeing one at the moment.

If it makes you feel better, say 'hello Mr Magpie, how's your wife and family' whenever you see one. My Nan says it cancels out the bad luck. And she knows everything.

And now you see, when you were starting this thread, the other magpie flew down next to his mate. So all is well!

I'm stupid about magpies too and have to say "Good morning (afternoon / evening) Mr magpie, how's your wife and children". Not sure where i got this from or what it's actually supposed to do but have to say it nethertheless and how do i know it's a male or actually has any children. See - stupid!

Hey thanks everyone, I know it is silly and only 'matters' to me at the moment because I have some anxiety about the birth.......will greet all of the ones I see from now on and ask how their families are, even if that does make me look completely mad!
