Labour Music -- what tunes for motivation?

Yikes

Am a day over with firstborn. So excited.

Making a playlist to take to hospital ... what recommendations for happy, motivational, you-can-do-it, or calming tunes ...

we took an mp3 player with a great selection

unfortunately we only noticed two hours into a 3 hour lsbour that dh had put it on loop - had played coldplay's rush of blood to the head (one track, not the whole album) over and over. it was me (the one high on gas and air, and the one in agony) that noticed - not dh or the midwife .

but i still likethe track and think it's a good potentially calming one (if played once).

that's funny!

Currently thinking ...

You are my world -- Communards

Stuck in a moment you cant get out of ("I am not afraid of anything in this world!") -- U2

Crazy -- Gnarls Barklay

Isn't she lovely -- Stevie Wonder

Obviously we know we're having a girl!

I did my labour with DS to the Smiths

I insisted that dh make a tape for my first labour, but when it came to the bit we discovered that I'm a labour-in-the-dark-don't-talk-to-me-or-touch-me kind of girl

oh well, def worth doing as how could we have known that in advance?

good luck clemsterdarcy and come and chat on the due in Sept thread if you want, we're a welcoming bunch and there are a few impatiently waiting who'd love the company (I had dd a week ago).

my advice is

don't.

If you are sufficiently in labour to need to be in hospital, you're not likely to feel like listening to anything. Peace and quiet is what you'll need.

I speak as someone who had a dozen CDs in her hospital bag - everything from the Strokes to the Smiths. None of it listened to until we were on the postnatal ward and ds was doing all-night marathon feeding.

snap tassis.

lol Clemsterdarcy. That Ice Cube song always makes me feel a bit prudish - it is so rude.

I didn't use any music, but I thought a happy, motivational you-can-do-it CD would be riverdance.

Push it by Salt and Pepa?

aDAdOnMumsnet · 22/09/2006 14:06

although most of labour seems to be about fighting the urge to push. Obviously not done it personally or anything!

To be honest, I didn't enjoy music whilst in labour. The mw had the radio on and I asked her to turn it off as it was driving me up the wall.

do not play the radio if using gas and air, i had the music, the djs voice, the woman in next rooms screams, dps voice skipping in my head!!i felt crazy!!!

reckon you're all going to be right about the 'need quiet' rather than music ... just a welcome distraction to jig around the apartment to your suggestions now that I am past due date to alleviate nerves ...!

Well, with es I never got round to the music part, lol...with ms I listened to popmusic (all nice memory from my clubbing days in Cyprus, lol) and Enrique Ingelisas (sp?) also nice to listen too...hmm...
With ys I listened to some sort of Indian rythm music...no real words...nice and calming...!
So, basically any music you like really, and take calming and more funky music mayube so you got somehting to suit your mood

didnt want music

had an abba compilation and asked mw to turn it off, too distracting

you are going to be in non-trivial pain. consider what music you normally like when in pain.

Oh goodness, couldn't have been doing with any music in labour! I think it would have annoyed me.

Report
pointydog · 22/09/2006 20:29

I had the radio on with dd1 but tuned out after a few hours. Had a brief moment of lucidity, emerging from strong contraction and diamorphine haze, to hear the one-hit wonder 'how bizarre, how bizarre'. Looked at dh, smiled, then descended into pain once more...

Music. You'll be wanting candles and feathers next.

noonar · 22/09/2006 20:32

lol -at first i thought you meant labour music as in theme tune for party pol broadcast!
