Consultant?

Hello all, just wanted to know if the consultant you see for a Caesarian is the one that does the surgery?

Depends on many things and here is always uncertainty. They will probably try to book you with that Consultant, but they may be on holiday or even off sick that day. OR you may go into labour early (before your planned section) and they may not be on duty or may be away/sick etc.

I was at a labour ward forum meeting last week and the consultant chairing it said she doesn't often to c-sections - even her electives she leaves to her registrars to do, it's how they gain experience. So no, not necessarily. If it's a straightforward case - probably not, if it's complicated they may be there.

Good question to ask them - how do you know you're talking to a consultant and not the registrar in the first place?!

Are you private or nhs? If the former then most definitely - that's what you're paying for...in my experience at least.

Thanks for the replys all. I think I'll ask when I go back and see him in a couple of weeks. I do have complications with my pregnancy even though I chose a c-section anyway. Due to complications it's basicly a section, end of. It is definitely the consultant who I saw and not a registrar. On my letter it had I will be seen by the dr or one of his team and it was the dr whom I saw.
