Car seats

Buy group 1 or 2?

DD2 is 12mo 9kg and head near the top of her group 0 seat.

DD1 is still nice and comfy in her group 1 seat (3.6 years old, 14kg)

I'm not sure whether to buy a second group 1 seat for DD2, or to buy a group 2 seat (which DD1 is just under the minimum weight for) for DD1 and put DD2 in our existing group 1 seat.

Does anyone know how much safer a group one seat is compared to a high-back booster? And is being just under the weight limit a big problem?

Thanks

I would keep your dd1 in her existing seat @ 14kg she is a long way from outgrowing it yet and it is far safer than being in a highback booster. At her weight she would not be secure enough and could easily slip through the seatbelt if in a high back. Also if your dd is still within the hight limmit of her group 1 seat i doubt she would be tall enough to fit the highback booster.

Thank you. That's what I was thinking, but DH doesn't want to spend on another group 1 seat...
Do you know of anywhere I can point him to to 'prove' this to him?

You might get away with a little longer of DD2 in the group 0 seat, by which time DD1 may have grown? DD1 is old enough for the high back booster but not heavy enough.

My DD (3.3) has just recently moved up to the high back booster and seems quite secure in it. She is 15kg and just about sensible enough not to undo the seat belt at the wrong time. Slipping under the seatbelt is the big concern, so it depends on the shape of your DD1 and the particular group 2 seat you choose.

I just thought of another option - you could by a group 1-2-3 seat for DD1. This is more expensive than a group 2 seat but given that you'll need two group 2 seats for quite a long time, a good investment. I think there are seats available which have the 5-point harness but then you stop using it and move to the seat belt when they get bigger.

Good luck!

Thanks all. Will try getting another Group 1 seat I think (when DD2 is well and truly out of the top of the baby seat).

Catilla's idea was a good one (thanks ) but I've heard bad things about multi-group seats.

Loopymumsy - thanks for that; DD1 had to go front facing because she was horrendously car sick in RF but I'll look into RF group 1 seats for DD2 as she doesn't seem to suffer at all. I'd forgotten all about that so thanks for the reminder.

Hi I have been reviewing the Graco Nautilus 1 2 3. It is fab. It actually goes from nine months till 12 yrs old. It has different options regarding headrests, reclining, five point harness etc... It even has a drinks holder.

My HV pointed out to me that my lil one needed the next stage as she was weighing 20lbs at 71/2 months.

I expect your OH will approve as it will last through all the stages until a seat is no longer required!

If you get the britax two way elite, you can use it rear facing or forward facing until 25kg. My DD is currently 15kg rear facing in it, aged 2.4.
