what age did you put your children into booster seats and not the whole back and headrest type?

At 9yrs old but that's only because it's the only thing that will fit in-between our 2 car seats.
If it wasn't for that I would be making sure dss sat in a high backed booster as they offer far more protection.
I know he would complain though, he complains about just having to sit on the bottom bit as his mum doesn't make him use one at all.
