Do you know where the best places are to go and see tents that are up and you can look around in? Been to Go Outdoors in Cheadle but they didn't have the larger Outwell tents (only Montana 6) - would like to see the Vermont and Montana 12 if possible.

Any ideas?

We got our tent from Winfields here they had quite a range on display outside - you could ring & ask if they have the ones up you are after

Hi there, you could try Camperlands in S Manchester but I don't know whether their tent display is up yet as it's in a huge covered warehouse type place.

The best place to go though are the Yeomans Outdoor displays They tend to be in big fields and it was the only place apart from a campsite- that we saw a Vermont and the Monty. They did have one in Poynton last year but it doesn't seem to be on the list.

Where in the NW are you? - roughly

Not far from you I don't think Lucycat - South Manchester.

Which tent do you have?

My head is going to explode with the options!

Currently looking at Outwell Vermont XL or Montana 12 (there are 5 of us).

Would you prefer to be at the other of the tent from the children? or next to them?
The bedrooms the main difference - personally I prefer the Vermont but it does only have the 2 bedrooms with a dividing curtain in one. and the single bedroom is really small - fine for a sulky teenager who 'needs their space' - it does however have a wardrobe and the 'outside' area at the front would be great for having a separate cooking area.

We've got the Norfolk Lake, she's on my profile and I love her to pieces!

Someone has a Vermont on here I think, I'll have a think and get back to you!

Hi again. While they are little I think I'd prefer to be next to them (paranoid mother alert!) - they are only 7 (in a week's time and he is small for 7), 5 and 3.

The Vermont XL looks like it has 3 bedrooms - 2+3+2 or 1 depending which website you look at!!

What I like about the Vermont XL is the huge living space (essential if it lashes it down!) and the porch/canopy area.

Norfolk Lake one looks lovely but is a lot more expensive isn't it.

mmm yes Peachy talked me into it last summer, it was massively reduced, I'd just got a new job and I think I was drunk too....but yes, she is truly gorgeous, we're taking her to France this summer and I'm looking forward to the 'cooling' polycotton thing.

The 3rd bedroom is more of a single although 2 small children could sleep in it, we really liked it when we saw one last summer but we already had a nylon Outwell so it seemed a bit daft not to upgrade rather than just get a bigger one.

I'd recommend it. The porch area is very like ours and it's great to keep it all out of the main tent bit.
You'll have no problem on most campsites either.

Oh good, I was a bit worried about the size and whether it would be an issue on some sites.

Do you know of any other shops where they have them on display round us?

We got a Vango Diablo 6 person from Camperlands in Northenden last year. Friend was there at the weekend and I think they have a few big tents on display now. They definitely had Outwells when we were last there.

Well, had some great responses on ukcampsite website so I think we'll go with the Vermont XL - would still like to see it up though.

Dying to get one and try it out in the garden!

I never thought I'd be so enthusiastic about camping - I like my luxury and comfort!! Hope I'm not looking at it through rose tinted spectacles!!

Ask away I researched them to death...

You can spend anything from about £70 to £700. We've bought a Burley D'Lite for £375.

It seats 1 or 2 kids, is pretty light, very well made, sturdy/safe, has fab storage, is easy to attach to a bike.

Chariot also make great trailers, but a bit more £££

What I'd really like though is a Triobike for the 3.5mile school run starting in September (website doesn't seem to be working?) A mere £2000...

Oh well, we had settled on a Vermont but now I've just emailed the campsite and their pitches 'are not suitable for the latest dome or tunnel type tents - above 6 berth (5.5m in any direction)'

Seriously - which family tents fit into that footprint?!

Arghghghghghghghghg!

OP posts:

amazonianwoman · 10/03/2008 15:23

Err, none?! Ours is definitely more than 5.5m. Is paying for 2 sites ridiculously expensive?

Themildmanneredjanitor - In that case, this site has lots of useful info. We had one of the rear door mounted bike racks which fit 3 (I think) bikes - they are cheap (around £70) but the bikes aren't that secure if you have to leave the car + bikes. We now have Thule roof bars (which fit a roof box too) and 3 bike roof carriers which kind of grab the main bike tube and can lock the bike in place - so v secure. No idea how much they were, will ask DH.
