we've camped for years
After several air bed disasters we got aero beds which were better
For the last few years we have had a trailer tent. Foam mattresses, bliss
I want to sell it now and get a bell tent
A friend lent me a cheap sim a few years ago. Honestly, I couldn't actually tell it was there. It was like being on the ground
Are some if them genuinely comfortable?

Was the one you borrowed really thin? Mine is 7.5cm and is as comfy as my old air bed (but much warmer). You'll need 10cm for the height of luxury.

It looked about 2" and offered no comfort at all
I need to look at the better ones
Is there any difference in brand?

Mine are from Costco so nothing special. If you have a search on the camping topic you'll find different recommendations. I think Exped are supposed to be good, and Vango do several different types.

in our glampsing units we use these as extra beds and then put sheepskins on top - 2 or 3 per bed. realyy comfortable, really warm, really cosy, and they all fold down into a small space

I use the kind of camping bed that nettletea suggested with SIM on top. They are brilliant- so comfy and warm. We camped for 5 nights when it was only 5 degrees at night and were fine. The beds can a bit of a faff to put up though if you have lots though (I have to put up 4 and a tent and everything else by myself so that just might be indicative of my circumstances!).

If money is not an issue then consider exped megamat.

We bought these after someone recommended on here.

We put cheapo Gelert SIM's on top and have never slept so well!

Second the Exped megamat. After I got them and friends tried them out were up to the 4th family that have followed suit. They're amazingly comfortable. The investment is definitely worth it if possible, I spent more on replacing busted air beds and sims before I got them and allegedly last for years!

I have a Vango 7cm double SIM which is brilliant. Bought it in 2010 and I think there are 10cm ones around now. I always give it some extra puff to make sure it's inflated to the max :-)
