Not camping but looking for a stopover en route to Western Highlands

... So where better to ask than in Camping Grin

I've booked a week in Easter in Wester Ross. Really really excited. Didn't really stop and think about the journey from South London. Am now really scared. We were going to fly, but the price for the four of us is not pretty. Likewise the overnight train to Inverness.

SO - we're driving. And I'm scared. We need a stopover. Quite far north. I'm thinking of Cairngorms/Aviemore as the last two hours of the journey are just west from there. Maybe do Landmark. Would welcome a hotel reccomendation.

My other thought is to go the Western route from Glasgow, stay somewhere near Loch Lomand.

Just want a night of luxury, some lovely view and a nice walk or something for kids to to.

Any thoughts welcome.

Stop at the Hilton in Dunkeld. Just off the A9 so no great detour from the main road. Pool for kids, riverside location, lovely walks, easy walk into village if you fancy a bar supper rather than hotel food and it's about an hour and a half south of Aviemore, which in the grand scheme of the trek you're doing is nothing!! Also, the A9 from Dunkeld north can get pretty hairy…you'll need your wits about you, not recommended as the journey to do when you've already been driving for about 8 hours!
Where in Wester Ross are you going as it may not be as quick from Aviemore as you think?

Coylumbridge beside Aviemore is good. Or if you want to be in that area but not pay those prices then there are a few decent hotels in Kingussie/Newtonmore that are a bit cheaper. Inverness has a couple of travelodge type places on the A9.

I agree with whoever said you might be more than two hours to your destination from Aviemore. Once you get past Inverness it's much slower going, even more so once you get off the main road to Ullapool. We stayed near Gairloch and it takes a long time to wind your way out there!

Also, I'd forget about the Loch Lomond route, it's a nippy single carriageway road and if you get stuck behind a caravan or lorry, the options for overtaking are limited. At least going via Aviemore you have motorway to Perth and then the A9 has bits of dual carriageway that let you past slower vehicles every so often.

Where are you coming from, how long is the total journey?

Sorry for not answering, after noone answered the first few days, I thought my thread had died!

Have added an extra 5 days to the holidays, in Carrbridge, 5 min walk to Landmark. Am ridiculously excited.

Thanks all for answering.
