Nipple vasoconstriction - any experience anyone?

Have had this from three months pregnant - dd is 19 weeks. Every time it is cold, or even going from one room to another that is maybe a degree colder my nipples go purple then white and feel like they are being burnt. So after being treated countless times for thrush I went to see a breast feeding counsellor yesterday who immediately said - its vasoconstriction.

So am going back to the GP on Friday to try and get some Nifedipine - also known as Adalat. Just wondering if anyone has any experience of this? Has the Nifedipine helped? How many courses did it take? Also was your GP happy to prescribe it?

Any advice gratefully received - haven't been down the freezer aisle in the supermarket in over a year

Yes! I have a similar problem though not as severe as you.

A breastfeeding counsellor advised me that tea and red wine are good for it and so my 'special medcine' of a small glass of wine a night does seem to be helping.

Ahh that's what it is! I've had that when really cold for years, worse when pregnant.

I have no advice but if it happens regularly you have my sincere sympathies!

The breastfeeding counsellor said that wool breast pads can help if it's not too bad but from what I had described I had the worst case she had seen - oh well I suppose it is nice to be unique for something

She held out on the red wine advice though! I will give it a try tonight

I have Raynaud's and got it in my nipples in the early days, it's not as bad now. I found that when she came off she breathed on my wet nipples and that was very painful, so I learned to move her quickly when she came off.

I've heard of filling a nappy with warm water and putting them over your breasts. Didn't ever try it, but I've heard it works.

I have it in my arms too so I tended to wear a lot of extra layers!

Haven't had drugs, so can't comment on them.

Just a bump and an update. Went to the GP today and by an amazing stroke of luck she had been to see the same bf counsellor as me with her dd so had no probs getting the nifedipine she had recommended. So fingers crossed it will work!
