BF during the night - hungry baby dozing off - not getting enough?

My DS (9 weeks) wakes up at about 2am for a feed and feeds hungrily for a few minutes. After that, he dozes off and I have to encourage him to go back on again. This happens throughout the whole feed. I have made the mistake in the past where I have thought his turning away meant he has had enough (it does in the day). I have put him back in his cot only for him to wake up again.

Last night I made a conscious effort to spend longer on his feed making sure he had a lot from one side. The whole thing took around 40 mins but I was confident he'd had a better feed. The same thing happened again and he wouldn't settle. My DH later gave him 3oz of EBM and he guzzled this down. This makes me think he's just not getting enough during his feed.

What do you think? Should I bf him in the night then top him up with a few ounces of EBM? He gets a 6oz dream feed of formula at 10.30pm and I usually express at around 9.30pm.

I should also mention that he gets his dream feed in a bottle as he won't take the breast when asleep. I have used formula as haven't had the time to express enough.

by nine weeks some babies are very efficient at removing milk from the breast. so once he delatches I would put him on the second side as the faster flow of milk may stimulate him into taking more before he gets dozy. Don't bother about foremilk/hindmilk if you are.

that he guzzled 3oz of ebm means nothing. an artificial teat is a superstimulus and encourages a baby to feed more despite what the body may be telling him.

dreamfeeds never seemed practical to me so can't comment there.
