BFing 10 month old just started to HURT MY POOR NIPPLES

and I'm not sure why or how to stop it. We had HUGE problems at the start, with thrush and a poor latch, but from 4 mo til now it has been lovely. NOw all of a sudden my poor nipples are sore again.
He cut his top front teeth about a week ago and tho he's not biting, I wondered if they could be grazing my nip and that's causing the pain? Any ideas about what it could be and what might help please!!

Mine nips suffered badly when I found out I was pregnant with ds2 and still bf ds1!

Not saying this is the only reason though, maybe it is his teeth. Hope it gets better soon.

Hi Spink - I went through a really sore phase when dd cutting her teeth. For a few days it felt like my nips were being stroked with razor blades - really unpleasant - but that went away and all fine now. I think she's got used to having those bad boys in her mouth and doesn't clamp down so much & maybe nips have toughened up some more. I think I just gritted my teeth - if it had carried on I would have prob reached for the lansinoh again. Hope you can get through it - dd now got all upper & lower fronts and bf is really nice again. Good luck xx

sorry I didn't reply before.. we had a 46 hour game of Trivial Pursuit to finish
mower - I would love pregnancy to be the reason but don't think this month is our lucky one. dh and I have barely seen each other . And now only one of my nips is hurting, and only when I feed in certain positions! so I think I'm with mylovely and it is a tooth rubbing thing - the razor blade description is completely what it's like. It really bloody hurts!!!! so hoping it won't last much longer.
mower - out of interest, how often were you bfing when you got pregnant?? I do 7am, 3pm and 7pm... wondering if that is too often for baby to be made?
thanks for posting.
and hope you had a lovely Christmas!

Not mower but 3 times a day didn't stop me getting pregnant at 16 months (don't think even early-day feeding is an absolute pregnancy-preventer). Glad it's easing up on one side - probably just means he's grown a bit and the 'right' position for the 2 of you has shifted slightly and without thinking about it you've adjusted one way but not the other. Teeth don't cause the problem - if they did it would still be bad on both sides - but they certainly highlight it. DD and I have had to go through several changes of 'normal' as she's grown. Sometimes I just have to remind her to open her mouth properly and insist on relatching if she doesn't.

would it be possible that with the new teeth arriving and potentially sore mouth, that lo isn't opening as wide as he should and is sort of 'gripping' when he should be milking the boob? Check again that he is getting a good mouthful and is not trying to chew. it might just take a bit of time for your nips to get the bomb-proof state of those of us who have fed a few babies for extended duration (ie virtually no feeling whatsoever - to the good or bad) or a little repositioning to sort out how the teeth figure in the equation.

I will keep a close eye on his latch and mouthopening. When he was very small, he used to not like opening wide & the pain then was terrible, cranial osteopath reckoned it was to do with his head getting stuck during birth.. teeth might well have resurrected that issue..
