Milk Supply During Pregnancy

Hi

I am 6 weeks pregnant and breastfeeding my 16 month DD. She is teething and therefore nursing a lot more than normal.

I know I usually have had plenty of milk, sometimes she breaks off mid feed to gargle with my milk. However I thought the milk supply dropped when you got pregnant ? Today I started to leak milk, so I had to dig out my cloth breastpads.

Is it possible to keep your milk during a pregnancy ? Should I be leaking so early ? Is there anything I can do to encourage the milk to stay, as my DD is not ready to wean and if I am honest I don't feel ready either.

It will drop, but not necessarily at this stage.

I highly recommend the book Adventures in Tandem Nursing for information on everything to do with breastfeeding during pregnancy and tandem breastfeeding.

My best advice here is keep bumping til tiktok answers! It's not something I know about tbh, but congrats on the pregnancy anyway.

My midwife says that one of her mums fed all the way though her pregnancy and she never lost her milk it just changed to the new creamy colstrum (sp) at some point.

Interesting

Your milk changes flavour when pg, and some kids don't like it - about 2/3 self-wean during pregnancy. My ds1 did, I fed until I was 20w. Because he was self-weaning, my output was dropping, but I know it is definitely possible to continue bfeeding throughout pg and then to tandem feed afterwards - several MNers have done it. I was told it made morning sickness worse, and I did feel more rough second time round - though that may just have been coping with a toddler and morning sickness!
Congratulations, and hope all goes well

I am 34 weeks pregnant and still feeding ds. The colostrum has appeared but he tells me there is still milk there. Nature is one very clever bunny!!
