Infant feeding

Newbie to MN - anyone else got PCOS and found it difficult to produce milk??

I have a 5 month LO - born 5lb 9oz, I have had to mix feed her due to insufficient BM. I have spent over £1000, trying to get to the bottom of it and do all that I can to get it started, but nothing. I have now found out that women with PCOS often have a low milk supply due to insufficient levels of mammary tissue and therefore dont ever produce enough milk.

Anyone else heard of or had this problem? or even rectified it?

I had PCOS and looking back, probably had insufficient milk for my first baby. We put her crying down to colic at the time, and when she went on to solids at 5+ months, she put on 19 oz in the first week. However, I never supplemented, just kept latching her on. Problem did not recur with subsequent babies. BTW, dd1 is 13 now, big for her age and in good health.

What a struggle, Sassib....PCOS can sometimes be linked with supply probs, but it's by no means inevitable.

There are so many things that impact on supply. It may be you had a difficult start (with a small baby) , or you were not able to have your baby close to you all the time, or maybe you were not able to feed enough....lots of possibles.

What did you spend the £1000 on???? Is this in the UK?

What's the situation now?

Firstly, congratulations! Have you tried contacting the charity Verity? They may be able to offer you some help/advice and if they can't they should know someone who can. They have a website www.verity-pcos.org.uk

Good luck!

Hi everyone
firstly, thanks for responding.
Elasticwoman - fingers crossed the next one will be ok then. I will probably be wiser nxt time around

Tiktok: my sitution is still the same. Am still mix feeding. Yes had a tough start, the nurses rammed a bottle down her throat due to low blood sugar. But as soon as I got her home, we went to bed for a week, co-slept and I was topless and fed her all the time, expressed etc.

I spent £1000.00 here in the UK, on aids, herbs, a lactation consultant - who came to see me 5 x, mammogram and private appt with booby dr.

LO is an IVF baby, conceived after 9 yrs and ovarian cancer. So desperately wanted some part of my body to work. Still not giving up tho' - intend to give her what I have.

HV's and PNatal clinic - were useless, literally told me i was killing my baby, if i didnt giver her FF. and NCT never returned my phone calls.

again, thanks, will contact verity and see what they have to say.

Sorry for long post - clearly I still have issues in my head!
