Infant feeding

Baby rice and rumblings

Hi..

I have just started giving my 17 week old DD baby rice in the evenings. She is still exclusively breastfed (won't take a bottle which is a real pain).

I have noticed that her tummy seems to make loud gurgling noises quite a few hours after the baby rice feed - infact I am wondering if this is why she has started waking up 4-5 times in the night now.

Did anyone else find this when they started baby rice?

This isn't something any of mine have experienced, Ellasmum, but you could stop giving your dd baby rice for a few days and see if it helps. If rice is the culprit, you could leave it for a couple of weeks and try again later.

See all other info on starting solids. I would stop it. If you leave solids until nearer 6 months you can omit rice altogether.

You could try giving it to her at lunch time, which is the meal that my book said to start weaning with. This would give the tummy a chance to digest the food before bedtime.

Good luck

Ellasmum, baby rice didn't agree with our dd at first. Our old hv said that baby rice turns to water in their tummy but I'm not sure about that. I found that dd was happier on simple puree - pear, carrot or apricot - for quite a while and is now having a teaspoon of rice in her puree with no ill effects at 24 weeks. If your dd is happy on her b/fs I would leave off weaning for a while, we carried on as dd was v. hungry and needed fruit to stop her constipation being bottle-fed.

BTW our dd prefers her solids in the evening too.

Baby rice constipated my DS, so I'm glad I didn't start with it! I too gave simple purees - carrot first, then sweet potato - mostly because he had a tendency to constipation, but also because breastmilk and formula are sweet. Have you tasted baby rice? Yuck, tasteless. I also always gave new foods at lunchtime, that way you can more easily see any reactions, and not lose precious sleep as a result.
