Infant feeding

explosive bum in 3 week old - what to do?

Hello, my darling dd2 is proving a tricky one, gets very upset by volcanic bowel movements often three or four in a row, if some are coming on she won't settle and life is getting pretty miserable. What I want to know is is it something I'm eating - advice on bfing and diet is so vague, I have no idea how to isolate possible cause as everyone tells me something different about what it might be and how long it takes to get through to the milk. Also if I avoid everything mentioned (wheat, dairy, fruit, most veg I am left with nothing to eat at all, which can't be good). Or maybe it's not my diet at all and just the way her digestion is. I fed dd1 until 13 months (she was tricky too at first but when I cut out fruit juice was fine) and do NOT want to give up bfing because I feel I can't eat anything, but I am becoming so exhausted by these colicky fits. Any advice gratefully received. Thank you so much!

How often are you feeding her? I think that too much foremilk can cause explosive poos so maybe if you are feeding little and often that could be aggravating it?

hi, I've found that there is really conflicting information about the impact of diet upon B/F, partly because we are so unique in what we were consuming through the pregnancy, what our diet was like prior to that and then afterwards. Many mums have found certain things trigger a reaction in their babies like
onions, garlic, citrus fruits, beans, fizzy pop, alcohol, caffine etc.. dairy....etc.

It also depends on what you've eaten and drunk the adsorption time into your milk etc. So breakfast is going to be in your milk mid-morning etc.

From experience there are some fab people on mumsnet who give superb information and support and I'm sure they'll answer you much better.

I could be wrong but sometimes if you change you B/F position a little, dd may take a little less air, which would ease any further discomfort.

Both my ds went through what seemed like coliciky, windy awful weeks, and TBH I don't really understand what sorted it out. You are doing such a wonderful thing for your daughter I hope you find some reassurance and keep on going.

I think the most common foods that can affect them are citrus and dairy. I found dd got really windy if I had too much milk or orange juice - try cutting down one or other and see how it goes. Or perhaps you could keep a diary of your food and her bowels (!) and see if you can work out what it is.
Good luck

My DS was like that in the first few weeks and also had really bad wind. I avoided cabbage, onions and fizzy drinks but tbh I think he just grew out of it - his digestive system matured. Sorry - that's not much help.
