When did your periods return? Breastfeeding

DouglasFirs · 07/11/2016 08:27

I thought it was normal for periods not to return while breastfeeding, but on two separate occasions my GP and a nurse were surprised that mine hadn't returned 7-8 months after giving birth.

When did yours return?

I think that's absolutely normal!
With DD1 my periods returned when she was about 14 months as I went back to work and dropped day feeds.
DD2 will be a year old at the end of this month and still no sign of period (not that I'm complaining Grin)

Meh. Mine came back 8 weeks after the twins arrived!
I suspect that even though I was exclusively expressing every 3hrs, because I'd had them at 26wks, my body just reset itself. I'm now breastfeeding them both but my periods are absolutely regular as clockwork.

About 13-14 months after birth.

I had a period at 6months (DD had been sleeping brilliantly for a few months) then DD gave up sleeping for a while an had no more until she was a year old.

Mine came back 28 days post birth on the dot. Every 28 days from then on. This was despite 100% exclusively breastfeeding.

2nd birth I think I got about 8 months.

Everyone is different.

IME HCP professionals express surprise because they never quite believe someone is 100% EBF, particularly post 6 weeks. My GP quite obviously didn't believe me, and repeatedly asked throughout my 10 week check if I'd ever topped up, given formula, left baby with dad, what never? Never given even a little top up? Never? Are you sure? Baby's never had a bottle? Never? Are you sure? Not even ready made formula? Are you sure dad hasn't given some while you had a break? Never? Are you sure?

9 months. I thought it was common for several months delay when breastfeeding.

Mine returned at 11 months after I stopped bf/mix fed after 6 months with dd1.

With dd2, I bf her too, and returned after 4 months.

About 13 months the first time, and not yet at 20 weeks the second time round. Hopefully they'll stay away for as long as last time, fingers crossed. 7 to 8 months seems like a normal time to me. Maybe they haven't got much experience of women feeding beyond 6 months, and are accustomed to women getting their periods back sooner.

Dc1 was 1 year old - my period actually returned on her first birthday
Dc2 will be one this month and there's been no sign of it.

GPs often don't know much about the normal functions of women's bodies, ime.

After a couple of years - 27 months I think but it was a long time ago. We were 'on demand' from the start.

I got a first one at 3 months, and then nothing till 10 months. At this time I was already back at work 2 days a week (from 8 months).

My DS is 22 months and still not got mine back, though he still has several short feeds in day and a least two overnight, so guess that's why I'm getting such a long break from them

Mine returned when dd about 18 months. I fed till 2 but was only feeding once a day by then.

Mine came back at 8 months with DD2 and she's exclusively breastfed.

Report
Cocothecat · 10/11/2016 07:00

I never got one while I was feeding them exclusively. Always came back once they were eating a reasonable volume of solids and also sleeping a good stretch through the night, so maybe 8 months on average.

DS is 7 months and starting to actually swallow food now but no sign of a period yet. He does tend to use me as a dummy for naps/at night Breastfeeding has made me a tad underweight though so I'm hoping I'll have to periods until I stop breastfeeding.

4 weeks with no. 1, formula fed
8 weeks with no. 2, ebf. Really not fair, I feel cheated.

14 months, once they were night weaned mostly.

I EBF'd both to six months (and then carried on while introducing solids).

My period returned at exactly 5 months with both. I was very surprised.
