thick breastfed poo

DS only has a poo every 4-6 days. This doesn't seem to be a problem although he does do huge farts which wake him up in the morning! When the poo does come, it is soft - but not runny. It's dark yellow, and sometimes verges on brown. Maybe it just looks thick because there's so much of it, but it definitely seems gloopier than it used to when he was going several times a day. I'm not keenon giving him fruit juice or even water. I massage him every day but this doesn't seem to do much for his pooing. I wouldn't worry if it wasn't for this funny poo, which isn't offensive smelling but not as sweet smelling as it was before!

Sounds fine to me, sounds just like mine once they had gone through the pooing all the time phase. If it's taking longer for the poo to get through his system then probably more water is being absorbed so it's less runny. If it isn't causing him any discomfort I wouldn't worry about it.

Yes, the last one didn't but then he's always pooed more frequently than the other 3 anyway.

My DD used to have nice runny poo - usually so runny it was up her back and all over her vest
She now poos less frequently, say every other day and is defo thicker and not as yellow as it was. But less dirty vests

Can I ask how old your babies are?

Ds has stopped pooing so frequently in the last week (he's 6+6). Lots of wet nappies and he seems fine in himself but he can go a couple of days without a dirty nappy rather than 4 or 5 a day since birth (there's lots when he does go though and they're the usual mustardy colour & quite loose - seems like he's saving it up...)

My DS is nearly 11 weeks. He was about 5 weeks old when his poos slowed down - he went from pooing three or four times a day to every few days. Is quite reassuring and also makes sense to know that they're probably thicker becasue they've been inside for longer and are more 'processed' perhaps!

definitely Shona - sometimes feels like you're completely alone in your problems, then you come on MN and realise everyone else is the same and the 'problem' isn't a problem at all!

i found it helped to make sure i drank plenty of water / herbal tea myself and limit dairy. if i enjoyed one too many starbucks lattes, it definitely made my dd's poos thicker... (saying that, she is now 14m old and can't tolerate dairy so it is probably linked to that...)

my son pooed infrequently from about 6w-12w but unlike your son he was often uncomfortable or in pain and he became lethargic and didn't want to feed. after many phonecalls trying to figure out what to do (after all- infrequent pooing is completely normal) finally we got some simple and practical advice- "take his temperature, rectally". sounds crude but it often seems to work and gets the body to take care of business on its own.
however,if your son isn't bothers by infrequent poos then i am sure you will be told that there is no problem and no need to "do" anything at all.
