How to night wean?

DS is 1 in a couple of weeks. I'm sure he doesn't need milk overnight (eats loads of solids and has slept through a few times) and I'm absolutely sure that feeding him back to sleep has led to the horrendous situation I'm now in in which when he wakes at night he will only sleep on me with my boob in his mouth for the rest of the night. So I want to night wean. But how? Do I just stop and send DH in at night from now on?
Sorry if this is a ridiculously stupid question - I've been up since 2.30am because of the above problem and my brain isn't working very well!

Does he sleep with you? I found that DD slept more once we had moved her into her own room.

Have you read the No Cry Sleep Solution? I found that helpful with DS and this is a good article too Smile

The key thing when I weaned my LO was me not being available at night, think I slept on the sofa for about 5 nights. At that point he was sleeping in his cot 7.30pm-12am roughly, then would come into our bed for a feed & a cuddle. I wasn't there so OH just offered him some milk from a bottle & cuddled him til he settled. Once my milk had dried up I stopped sleeping on the sofa. By the time I weaned at night he was having cow's milk from a bottle at nap time etc so was used to taking a bottle from his dad. Good luck!

With both of mine I found that stopping all night feeds in one go was best. DH took over for the whole night until all demands for night milk were done with. TBH except the first night which was difficult things improved in a few days and within a week night feeds were forgotten. However I did this at 7 months for both, when they were a bit more accepting of what they did/did not get.

Yes - no cry sleep solution for weaning off slowly if you have lots of time and patience.

If you have neither then Jay Gordon's nightweaning method is supposed to be excellent and it's just an article you can read online.

Thank you all - that's really helpful. Going to try tonight with DH going in if he wakes before 5am. (Sadly 5am is when he wakes up!) Though weirdly tonight he totally refused his bedtime feed which is odd...

We did Jay Gordon & it was excellent. It took about 3 nights.
