Infant feeding

2 weeks no improvement

hi I posted on here about 10 days ago as my nipples were red and really sore.

I have tried creams, shields, airing my nipples but nothing works.

My left is worse than the right but the right has started to get very sore as it's taking the brunt of it all.

At first I thought it was trauma from my pump but I haven't expressed in 2 weeks.

My nipples are very red and raised near the areola and when ds2 feeds there is a burning sensation and feeding my nipples look raw and they weep. I'm going to a breast feeding support group tomorrow hoping they could shead so light.

Anyone else offer some help and advice? X

Hi, is there any pain with the redness? Either before or after a feed? Also are there any white spots in DSs mouth? I'm asking because thrush can give you red nipple and burning sensations, and I'm wondering if it might be that.

I was thinking thrush too, given the pain and the redness. Also have you been using a lanolin cream like lansinoh? I found that to be the most soothing kind of cream.

Hi everything, yes awful pain kind of like a burning. I can't see white spots in his mouth, The inside of his lip looks a little white. Is thrush painful for them? X

If you think it is thrush you need a treatment for both you and DS until it has cleared (and for a little after), also change breast pads often, keep your nips clean and aired, wash bras regularly, and you cam also use a solution of cooled boiled water and vinegar to sooth your nips (I think it is a tbsp of vinegar to a cup of water)

No I don't think it is painful for him, but white in his mouth does sound very thrush like! You need to see your HV/GP. They will likely prescribe nystatin drops for him and a cream for you.

The Lansinoh is marvellous for sore nips, but will have no effect on thrush on afraid, give them a little bathe in the vinegar solution after each feed it will help!

My HV did my prescription when I had it, I would imagine yours could too.

IT could be thrush. You can get it without baby having any symptoms. Have you had baby's latch checked? It's worth getting it checked at the support group. I'm a peer supporter and its the first thing we'd look at. Hope you get sorted soon.

Hi mama, I am hoping to get it checked tomorrow. Can his latch change all of a sudden then? He is 10 weeks old. X

Poor you. it does sound like thrush, the pain is described as being like tiny glass needles pricking your nipples when the baby feeds.

You and baby both need treatment - there are two options Nystatin or Daktarin, daktarin can be more effective but I can't remember what age it is ok from.

Also if it's thrush try to avoid sugar in your diet (as well as Everything's advice about washing bras etc)

Latch can and does change as baby gets bigger and has more head control and is stronger. You might find that you've been subconsciously letting him latch on different due to the pain you are having.

Mini, that is exactly the feeling I'm getting.

I will try and get GP appt tomorrow. Also will try and get latch checked.

Thanks for all your helpful responses xx

Morning Rachey how are you today? Have you managed to get seen?

Hi Everything,

I went to get the latch checked and that was fine, the lady was like you need to be seen by gp asap. I went to the walk in clinic (as i couldnt get an appt will wed) and saw the gp. when I showed her my nipples she winced.

DS2 has nystain drops and I have a cream. hopefully next week I will no longer feed through gritted teeth due to the pain.

Thanks for all your help xx

I'm so pleased you managed to get seen, hopefully the treatment will start to act nice and fast and you will get some relief! Please remember to keep on with the treatment after the symptoms have gone, I didn't and we ended up with it a second time Confused

Thanks everything.

I have also brought washable breast pads as I must admit my nipples leak quite a bit and sometimes it over soaked the pads, maybe that's what caused the thrush?!

I can see an improvement inside ds2 mouth but my nipples are still bad and have started to feel "burning" sensation. I know I should allow the medication to work I just have to be patient Smile

Sadly you take a little more healing than they do, but you will get there I promise xx
