windy BF baby ? latch

my dd is 8 weeks old, she's feeding every 2-3 hrs approx and gaining weight very quickly but seems v v windy and it really upsets her - she seems to gulp air when feeding and then does either huge burps or it all comes out the bottom end in explosive poos. She frequently twists around with a sore tummy before 'exploding' Her feeds are often quite short and she fusses as her tummy is full of air (you can hear and feel it when holding her)
I think she is latching on ok - it doesn't hurt, looks like the pictures that you see and she gets plenty of milk so is there anything I can do?
It can't be my diet - my other child was similar but was cows milk intolerant - so I am not eating any dairy at all.
Please help!

Do you have a local breast feeding group that you can get our latch checked out at? I'm not sure how she can gulp air when feeding - how does this happen?

Do you burp her over your shoulder after feeding - my two are complete windbags so you have my full sympathy!

mmm, sounds just like my dd.she's now 10 wks old and seems to be coping with the wind better.maybe its just this stage you have to get thru it,and it will pass, even tho it seems like its never-ending.you are doin all you can.whoever said that breastfed babies dont get wind & colic is /are wrong.

thanks both of you

LL I don't know how she gulps air but she brings up massive echoing burps and makes a gulping swallowing sound when feeding. I try to burp her, and feed her sitting up as that seems to help.
Its just got worse the past few days - she is windy from both ends with really smelly farts and explosive nappies. Otherwise well though and growing brilliantly...Anyone else any ideas?

glowworm - my dd was like this. She just seemed unable to burp without a lot of winding. She has a tongue tie, which has eventually stretched by itself, but she also has a tie of flesh which comes too far down between her two top teeth. Although the latch didn't hurt me after a while, I don't think it was an air tight seal so she was getting an awful lot of excess air.

Personally I seem unable to burp too which every member of my family finds hilarious, but I do wonder whether dd has inherited this too.

I started to use Infacol at about 7 weeks and when used at every feed it made a bit of a difference. I only noticed it was working when I missed a dose (it needs a cumulative dose) and she wouldn't burp.

THe only other thing that eased things was whne she learned to roll over and unfortunately for dd she was 11 months!! (most roll by about 6 months).

I also used to lie her down to sleep and expect her to wake up windy after about an hour rather than be surprised by it. Just adjusting my thinking made the evenings easier.

Definitely get your latch checked out - you never know. The only other thing I did was switch to decaf tea and coffee.

All the best. It does improve - honest - you're doing really well

My DS (6 weeks) does this - I think I have a fast let down, hence the gulping and windiness. He's colicky as well , Would second Infacol - it does seem to help.

My DS was like that, and it was down to my foreceful letdown, it did settle after about 4 months, always gets worse after a growth spurt but settles again. The trouble is DS would burp up loads of milk, would need topping up, so I always had an oversupply. If it is your letdown there are things you can do to ease it, such as feeding from one side for a few hourd before switching to the other. hth
