Infant feeding

Chimichanga Leic asked me to breastfeed in toilet!

Outraged at suggestion in new chimichanga Leicester tht I would breastfeed my 10 week old daughter in the toilet downstairs! Have emailed the restaurant and complained - but how can this happen in this day and age?!?
The waiter seemed horrified that I would want to feed at a table and said people normally feed in the toilet downstairs!

I guess they must also eat their lunch in the loo.

Did they ask you to feed in the toilet or tell you that other people usually feed in the toilet? Two very different scenarios. The first is illegal, the second is possibly a misguided waiter trying to be helpful.

I would contact head office.
Possibly a staff training issue - a memo going round reminding staff that if a premises allows babies they allow breastfeeding would prevent it happening again.
I guess if you're a youngster who has never considered baby care you'd just repeat what you thought was normal/the rules.

It depends on the conversation- did you ask to breastfeed? Did the waiter interrupt you breastfeeding or ask you to stop or move?

Telling you that most women feed in the toilet isn't actually breaking any rules- it may well be true.

Nope. He definitely said - you can't do that here, but you can feed in the toilet downstairs.

If you lived in Scotland you could have called the police and had him arrested. Here that is a criminal offence.

It's illegal to ask you to move for feeding. Anywhere you and your baby are entitled to be, you can feed.

Please follow this up - it may well be a staff training issue, rather than a daft and outdated policy.

Your local paper would be interested, too, but of course that means pictures and idiots commenting online that you are an attention-seeker or disgusting blah blah blah.

John lewis are fab for bf mums - Definitely take it further with head office as it's awful behaviour from the waiter

In your written complaint tell them that they were in breach of the 2010 equality act. it is illegal to ask you not to feed in a public place.

I would ask outright: do they intend on displaying a policy of no babies/mums, or will they retrain staff. I would also point out how disgusting it is expecting a baby - with lower immunity than an adult - to eat in a toilet. Some people need to have it spelt out!!

Outrageous!!! The waiter should be shot. Seriously!!

I have made a written complaint and let's see what happens... Hopefully the staff just need a little training!
