Please help, am desperate to ebf but my wee girl is just not gaining enough, mw suggested formula today at weigh-inHmm. DP says it is logical thing to do. They are re-weighing again in 4 days, I need a bulk-up plan! She does a good two-3 dirty nappies a day and 3-ish wet ones.... Otherwise seems her usual self

How often are you feeding? Do you feed both sides each time?

Hi, there are lots of way to increase a breastmilk supply, ideally if you could contact an IBCLC lactation consultant they will check your positioning, look at the weight chart, liaise with your midwife and get you back on track with a tailored plan. But for more self help ideas over the Bank Holiday these links may help you Is My Baby getting Enough Milk? and One Breast or Two per Feed and How Can I Pump More Breastmilk?

How long are you going between feeds? Maybe try increasing them. I had problems with this too, looking back I think it was a combination of things. What helped was always feeding on both sides - so if he fell asleep on boob 1 waking him up with a nappy change and putting him back on the other side - and feeding more at night. I'd been quite pleased when he was sleeping six hours at night, but that was too long really and he started gaining weight when I woke him up to feed at midnight.

It is hard, it will get better! Hopefully you have some good real life support?

Thanks all, she was 4.240kg at birth , lost 8%, gained a bit in first few days but went from day 10 to day 17 only gaining 10g! She is now 3.895kg....
She feeds about every 1.5-2 hrs during the day, cluster feeds in the evening between about six and eight, and feeds at least every two hours at night, except for about 8.30-12 midnight where I try to get some kip. I offer both sides and just started waking her/ making sure she takes both .
Thanks for the lactation consultant advice, think I should do this as nipples are still pretty sore. I used nipple shields on one mw's advice but MW yesterday at weigh in said def stop as this will be reducing supply/ inhibiting milk transfer. MW also said she thought LO wasn't swallowing for long, I try to tickle, keep her focused. Also have been doing breast compressions (I think!)

Could you express at all..

as long as she isn't unusually 'sleepy', then wait for the 4 days and see what happens...

My sisters dd, was latching on, suckling, a number of mw 's said she was drinking fine altho not gaining weight, sister took her in afew times... after afew days of crying, sacking on book and falling asleep and repeating, my niece wouldn't wake up. sister rushed her to the hospital.. Baby DN had lost alot of weight and I fact hadn't been taking any milk at all!

She is fine now, with no ill affects, but just be careful

Thanks fried, that's A bit terrifying!!! Fed her a bottle last night as started to worry was being stubborn and illogical and that would get a real telling off from MW on Thursday for not doing everything I can to bulk up LO. Am expressing now too after feeds but not a huge result yet....
