Goats milk (infant formula) to be withdrawn from sale in the UK

Hi folks,

Don't know if anyone here is using any of the Goats milk preparations for a baby at present but I have just recieved a memo saying that infant milks based on goats milk are to be withdrawn from sale from 17th September.

The info says that:

Goats milk is not nutritionally complete
Is not suitable for those with a cows milk or lactose intolerance and alternative formulas are available.

It apparently cannot be legally sold in the uk due to European legislation which says all infant formulas must be based upon cows milk protein, hydrolysed protein or soya protein.

Just thought people would like to know.

That is really annoying; I have recently started thinking about trying my 11 month old ds with some and the people that make Nanny Care milk were really helpful and sent me 3 sample sachets of their growing-up milk to try. I have asked Cow and Gate, Heinz and Sma for similar sachets (don't want to buy a big tub in case ds won't accept it or reacts to it) and they do not want to know. Typical!

bullshit about it not being nuritionally complete! it's alot closer to bm than cows milk and is higher in most vitamins and minerals.

dd has a milk intolerance, never needed to use the formula as i bf but i still use the normal goats milk as her main milk drink and have done since she was 1 year, before that i used it in all her cooking and on her cereal.

cows milk and anything made with it (including formula as i tried her on it at 6 months as i had intended to finish bf then)brings her up in the most appalling blistered nappy rash that spreads like wildfire and is horrendously painful for her. goats milk has no reaction.

goats milk is also known to be helpful for alot of exzemic children, have heard many stories of kids with head to toe eczema being put on goats milk and 14 days later it's completely clear.

as for soya formula.... tried dd on it before i discovered goats milk and she spat it at me, and i don't blame her! who in their right mind can honestly say milk made from beans is a better alternative to bf than milk from an animal?

Have to say there's been no advance warning beyond a month. Literally came back into the office at lunchtime and the info was on my desk.

Know a few Mums who are using it for their babies.

My guess is that you'll still be able to buy it over the internet though - they'll be ways round it.

Personally I'd ask for a hydrolysed protein milk over soya anytime.

It seems the concerns were the lack of studies with strict controls and also the small sample sizes.

oh FFS. Thanks for posting this. DS3 on goats milk made huge progress. Better buy some in (he's old enough for straight goats milk now anyway- but I tend to give occasional follow on formula as well sometimes for the added vits).

Oh no, that is awful news. They add so many nutritional supplements to formula milk, I cant believe that it isnt complete.
dd2 had loads of it, she is huge and healthy!

Wouldnt have given her cows milk or soya, as there are strong allergies to both in my family.
