Infant feeding

Baby screaming for 2 hrs after each feed

Hi I wanted some advice as am at my wits end!

My 10 day old has become inconsolable after each feed. She is mixed feeding on expressed breast milk and formula, both from the bottle obviously.

Our routine is generally

  • watch for feeding cues
  • warm milk while changing nappy
  • feed around 60ml
  • wind
  • feed more if she wants
  • wind

Sometimes at the end of this we get alert, awake time but more often than not she screams, goes red, beats her fists and draws her legs up into frog position. She often hiccups too. Was mostly evenings but now almost every time.

We are feeding her in an upright position, winding over the shoulder, using slow flow closer to nature teats. She is the same after breast milk or after formula and it takes 45 mins- 2 hrs to get her to stop after each feed. I presume this isn't normal??

Hmm could be silent reflux.

I would try giving infacol and colief (not at the same time) to see if either of those help.

Is she actually bringing up wind?

TBH as she's only 10 days old she could just be over tired which can cause them distress, for the first 6 weeks mine pretty much slept all the time apart from when actively feeding!

We have infacol so going to start trying that today.

She does a burp but you can still hear her tummy gurgling sometimes.

Is she likely to be overtired only 20mina after waking- just seems a bit of a coincidence with it only happening straight after a feed?

Yes it's possible, feeding is hard work for them in the early days. It does sound like it's trapped wind though if you can hear her tummy gurgling still.

I'm just a bit concerned that if she cries for 9-18 hrs a day (feeds 8-9times a day atm) that she can't be getting enough rest.

No she won't be, if neither infacol or colief make any difference then I would expect the gp will gry with infant gaviscon to treat silent reflux.

At 10 days old babies usually do nothing but feed, poo and sleep, so she really should be going back to sleep after a feed rather than having awake time - feeding is enough awake time. Perhaps all the jiggling and winding is keeping her awake and over stimulating her, can you try some gentle rocking and shushing instead? Try to get her to sleep as hard as you can, this might solve the crying.

She might not have completed the feed - feeding for a baby is a way of making a connection and being close, and downing the milk is only a part of the whole thing. What happens if you put her on the breast when you think the feed is over but she is still unsettled? Or you just keep her snuggled in close to you if she seems not to want to suck?

Thanks for all the tips- we are doing Infacol before the feed and then burping followed by shushing and gentle jigging/rocking which seems to be stopping her crying- it still takes up to an hour before she's fast asleep and ready to lie down but tbh I'm more than happy to cuddle her while she sleeps on me as long as she isn't wailing in misery!

Why not offer the breast again, though? All the jiggling and shushing and the rocking sounds like hard work ...

A really good winding tip for you: sit baby on your knee supporting her chest with one hand. With the other hand rub her back 3 times clockwise then 3 times anticlockwise then rock baby flat then back to upright 3 times. My lo was like yours at that age but infacol and the winding trick have really eased things. Good luck!

Also to stop the hiccups try and get her to take a bit more milk, works for mine. If she takes a bit more they stop almost immediately otherwise she's hiccupping for half an hour!

Tis hard work but as she is currently bottle fed EBM, we have to find other ways of soothing her!

It does seem to be working in that she's not actively crying now - I think we just have an unfortunate combo of her getting tummy aches with her not being able to go back to sleep unaided!!

Cord fell off this morning so hopefully some tummy massage can start soon too!

Sorry, smerlin, I missed she was getting the breastmilk as ebm.

Is direct breastfeeding not an option for you?
