Infant feeding

maximising formula intake

can you please let me if i cannot give 5 0zs of water and 6 scoops of powder to 6.5 month old dd. the reason i ask is because the water rises to 7ozs when i add 6 scoops to 6 ozs of water anyway, so this way it will rise to the intended 6ozs.

why am i bothered? well dd will barely drink 4ozs at a time so want her to get maximum calories/fluid...is this understandable?

really trying to maxmise calories/oz of formula she drinks...if this can be done?

also thinking of adding farleys rusk to lunch time feed (on mums advice), which is currently the poorest (3ozs) pls note she is on solids twice a day and barely takes 18oz of milk and has poor weight gain (2-4 ozs a week) hence why i am even thinking of these things.

she is optherwise well in her self

any tips, dos and don'ts most welcome.

I think it's generally advised not to change the formula concentration of 1 scoop per oz.

PLace the water first, then add the scoops.

I won't recommend making the formula thicker, talk with your HV if you are concerned about her weight. She may be cutting on formula because she is now on some solid food. If you want her to eat more, it may be even needed to cut down the formula further. But, I don't remember how many Oz per day your girl should be having at this age, so better to speack to the HV.

Personally I wouldn't do either of these things. I thought the recommended intake was 20 oz so she is not much down on that and you could give her dairy in her solids. How much does she weigh? Are you seriously worried about her weight gain? How is she getting on with the solids? Does she drink water?

foevermore, the only safe and nutritious way to feed formula to your baby is to mix it as the manufacturers tell you to. Measurement is done on the amount of fluid you put in the bottle - that''s why you put the water in first. Adding more scoops makes the formula too dense and this can be harmful to your baby's developing kidneys.

Mixing rusk in the bottle is unsafe - again it risks overloading the feed and yur baby's system.

Anyone will confirm this - but ask your HV about it if you need to know more.

Babies gaining slowly may be doing so because that's the way they are. On the other hand, she might gain better (if she needs to) if you give her smaller feeds more often.
