Infant feeding

Feeds taking ages due to snacking and sleeping

Having continued probs with BF'ing DD2. Have recoevered from mastitis only to get thrush in the same side as I had the mastitis so the pain goes on.

However DD2 (3 weeks) isn't doing much to help improve things! She's a realy snacker - she only feeds for about 5 - 7 minutes on a boob before coming off and then will fuss about, sleep, cry a bit, watch the world go by for ages and occasionally go back on for literally seconds at a time. This is making feeds last for hours which is impossible because I've got a 15 month old DD1 who needs entertaining as well.

I have had my latch checked and it is all OK, DD2 gaining weight well (has not lots any weight since birth at all). She seems to struggle a bit with coping with the letdown initally but once that has passed she's OK until she comes off the boob and starts to muck around. She's not draining the boob at the feed.

How can I resolve this and teach her to be a more efficient feeder? Am worried this might cause more mastitis - ended up in hosp with the first bout of it and don't want to repeat that. Any advice????

pennies, I can understand that this seems really diffcult because of the fact you have another child who also needs you....but at three weeks old your dd is not doing anything wrong or especially unusual.
You need help with other stuff, not feeding, if it is available.

You don't need to 'teach' her anything. She's little. She will learn herself. Please don't get stressed about this.

Think whether breast compression is going to help before taking it on though it won't harm....I doubt very much if it will make a difference. This is normally used for babies who are not feeding well. Your DD is doing fine.

Poor you, I had mastitis recently and I know how awful it is. However, I think that your baby's feeding pattern is pretty normal for a newborn - my ds was exactly like this. I think the thing to realise is that you can actually stop feeding them - you don't HAVE to sit there for hours. You can take her and your dd out and let him sleep a bit. I also suspect that because of your fast let down your dd is getting a lot of milk very quickly and doesn't need a lot of sucking to get her quota.
As she gets older the feeding pattern will change hugely, without your having to teach her anything.
