New Aptamil formula with added prebiotics - any problems?

Has anyone encountered problems with the new Aptamil formula now in the shops? It has twice the amount of prebiotics in it (listed as O.8g fibre, previously 0.4g). Whilst they warn you that babies will poo softer stools more frequently, my 6mth old has reacted quite dramatically - explosive, wet poos, very thirsty all the time and refusing his solids. Am thinking of changing formula now. Anyone else experiencing anything similar to this?

You might have more response posting on US talkboards with this, Gem. I can tell you that there is some concern over there about the effect of fatty acids (not the prebiotics) in exactly the way you say. Some infants appear to have a sensitivity to the algae-grown and fungus-grown substances (which is where the fatty acids are produced) and react in this way.

I have read concern that the diarrhoe and explosive stools associated with these formulas (and Aptamil has fatty acids in it) may be leading to under-nutrition in some babies.

I think it would be worth while calling the consumer helpline on the pack and reporting this, Gem.

I don't know of any reports showing concern about prebiotics and infant formula in the US.

Thanks tiktok, but it's the additional prebiotics (or fibre as listed on the formula's ingredients) that I'm interested in. I have managed to find boxes of the old formula being sold locally to me, which my son is much happier on. His stomach has now settled and he's eating fine. It's clearly the additional prebiotics that upset him. I'm just interested to know whether we're not the only ones. I just wish Milupa had introduced a new formula in tandem with the orginal one so that parents have a choice.

When my ds has had food containing the prebiotics (yogurt, and a vitamin supplement), he has had periods of very loose stools before his stomach settles down. Perhaps your son might get used to the new formulation? Not usre if I would want to persevere, though, poor you
