Liebster Lizard award - anyone know anything about these?

Someone sent me a nomination on one of my blogs. Googling just shows up links to other people nominating each other. It looks like a fairly harmless kind of mutual backslap thing, but does anyone know any more details?

I know no one can rip me off financially without me being a mug in the first place, but is this the sort of thing that will lead to my blog being deluged with irrelevant crap, or spam in my name deluging other people?

I don't know what the 'lizard' part is but the Liebster Blog Award was created in 2010 by Jasmin Wonderwall, Bird of a Paradise. It's just a blogging chain letter, that's been on the go for several years, to help build reciprocal links and blog awareness.

This is a (very) rough translation, from the German:

"So here are the instructions:
"You have been tagged and would like to participate? Create a post with the Love Blog image and copy the exact instructions (= the text you are reading). You should also link to the blog of the person who gave you the award and inform them via their blog comments, that you accept the award and leave your link to your Award post. Then consider your 3-5 favourite blogs, link to them in your post, inform each [blog] owner that they have been tagged via the comment feature and also specify the link of the post where the declaration is. Dear bloggers: The aim of this action is that we bring unknown, good blogs to light, so I would ask you not to post blogs that have already got 3,000 readers but talented beginners and people who are still not that well known, although they have been blogging for a while."

If you want to take part, nothing bad will happen to you - financial or otherwise! Just be polite and remember that your nominees may not want to continue the chain.

Btw, if your nomination also came with a list of questions to answer... that's because, some time ago, a blogger confused the Liebster Award with the 11 Meme and it's spiralled ever since (due to the chain letter concept). Up to you if you want to further the crossover or stick to the pure format. ;)

TBH I'm inclined to leave it alone, though I will probably send a polite email back to the person who tagged me in the first place.
Mainly because the blog in question (I have two) is one that's primarily to promote my erotic fiction and that of other people, so it includes some fairly explicit stuff at times, and I don't want a lot of people who don't like erotica getting in touch because they've been 'recommended' to me and had their hair curled by a bit of bondage on the blog...
