How do I keep 3yo ds in his room in the mornings?

Ds2 is just 3. He wakes any time between 5.30 and 6.30, like his brother. Always have, always will. If their sister (almost 5) were in complete isolation whe would sleep 'til at least 8 but that hasn't happened in years.
Ds2 takes himself to the loo, but then wants to play. I have to listen for him every morning and get up and escort him back to his room, which, without fail, causes a scene. Occasionally he will stay in his room, but more normally he'l yell for a while and then break free again. Often I have got up and started my day by then but am not ready for any of them to.
He's typical 3rd child, headstrong and knows what he wants (he has to) and bribery wouldn't work, nor clocks which wake up etc. he knows it's not time to get up but he doesn't care.

What worked for us was a star chart with a reward at the end of the week if there were 7 stars, and a tuff tape recorder. DS1 listens to tapes until a civilised hour, although they do have to get the hang of changing the tape if it's very early.

what time does he go to bed, have you tried putting him to bed later, black out blinds tell him its the middle of the night,or put a gate on his room so he cannot get out and put a potty in his room.
